Worth staying overnight in Luneburg?

Is Luneburg best as just a day trip from Hamburg or is it worth staying overnight? Trip is in early March so probably too cold to fully enjoy the heath and the other nature spots. Will visit the Salt Museum.

Hi Piza99,

My Husband and I visited Luneburg 4 years ago and spent 3 nights there. We loved it so much we are going back again this November for another 3 nights and taking friends. We are staying at the Bergstroem Hotel www.bergstroem.de and would highly recommend spending a night.

Hi Piza

Lueneburg is definitely worth staying the night. Visiting the Salt Museum is a good idea. If you can, join a guided tour - they%26#39;ve lots of interesting things to tell - though you can of course also do this tour on your own.

Also worth a visit is the town hall. They%26#39;ve got a bone in there which is supposed to be from the %26quot;Salzsau%26quot;. That%26#39;s the wildsow that is supposed to have bathed into a lake in the woods and when coming out of the lake, a hunter saw that the sow was white because of all the salt covering her. That%26#39;s how the salt in that region was discoverd and made Lueneburg a rich city in the middle ages.

The Kloster Luene is also great

Please note though that Lueneburg is not really near the heath - the name is misleading here. It%26#39;s about half an hour by car to get into the natural preserve with the well known landscape. Moreover, the heath is only blooming in August / September, so you won%26#39;t see that anyway.

Lueneburg also has great shopping opportunities and many very good restaurants, cafes and pubs - especially in Schroederstrasse, Heiligengeiststrasse and at the Stint, the famous quarter near the river Ilmenau.

There is really plenty to do in Lueneburg and you can very well spend two days there.
