Does this itinerary seem feasible?

We are planning a German driving holiday in July 2009 and this is the preliminary itinerary.

Day 1 Hook of Holland to Cologne

%26quot; 2 Cologne sightseeing

%26quot; 3 Cologne to Nuremberg

%26quot; 4 Nuremberg sightseeing

%26quot; 5 Nuremberg to Munich

%26quot; 6 Munich sightseeing including Dachau

%26quot; 7 Munich to Salzburg

%26quot; 8 Salzburg sightseeing

%26quot; 9 Salzburg to Hohenschwangau

%26quot; 10 Hohenschwangau to Augsburg

%26quot; 11 Augsburg to Dinkelsbuhl

%26quot; 12 Dinkelsbuhl to Rothenburg

%26quot; 13 Rothenburg to Wurzburg

%26quot; 14 Wursburgh to Hook of Holland

We understand the distances involved in the latter part of the holiday are relatively small and think we have enough time in each stop on the Romantic Road to take in the sights. That%26#39;s unless you tell me otherwise.

Also given the time of year are there any places you would advise us to book accommodation beforehand rather than take a chance of them being fully booked?

Thanks

Sounds like a nightmare to me. One-nighters are totally unreasonable for me. You%26#39;ll be on the roads driving all the time.

Definitely spend more time in less places. Starting with Munich you will not have enough time for sightseeing. One day for Munich AND Dachau? LOL One and a half day for Salzburg is maybe ok, but the rest ... sheesh.

I agree, one day trips are very tiring, you will need a vacation when your done with your vacation.

OK then I appreciate what you are saying.

We definitely want to visit Cologne, Nuremberg, Munich, Salzburg the castles at Hohenschwangau and see the Romantic Road. Can you suggest the best way to get the most out of the Romantic Road without so many 1 night stopovers so that we can extend our visit to Munich?

What are the must see parts of the road?

Some of the places that you want to see on the Romantic Road are not that far apart. You could stay in Rothenburg and make daytrips to Dinkelsbühl and Würzburg.

I like Augsburg but I might skip it in this case and stay two nights in Hohenschwangau. The area is quite beautiful and rich in tourist sights.

I actually think your itinerary is OK. If you prefer 1 night stopovers or longer day trips instead is a personal thing. First is more hassle but in the end it will save you time.

Really long are only the trips to/from Bavaria, but undoubtedly you have to get there in first place. The rest is OK, often just 1-1,5 hrs.

You may consider to reduce your overnight stays in Augsburg, Dinkelsbühl and Rothenburg to 2 places out of them. Dinkelsbühl and Rothenburg are rather close.

You better book in advance for Füssen and Rothenburg. Maybe also Salzburg.

The rest should be OK. In the bigger cities July is actually off season if it comes to hotels.

My booklet on the Romantic Road lists 29 places for stops on the road itself, and another 22 nearby, which certeinly isn%26#39;t all of them. So in two weeks you could probably visit all of these plus a few other interesting places nearby. The highlights of the Romantic Road are considered to be Neuschwanstein Palace, the walled medieval town Rothenburg ob der Tauber, and the Residence in Wuerzburg. If you want only to visit these places, it probably takes about 3 hours on the A7 autobahn which kind of subparallels the Romantic Road to get from one end point to the other. If you do this, I would suggest making a few other stops a short distance off the A7, the church at the monastery at Ottobeuren which constains more beautiful Baroque religious items than can be easily contemplated, the cathedral at Ulm with its record height church spire, and the Steiff Museum in Giengen, invetors of the teddybear.

In such a rushed vacation, I can%26#39;t really see repeating the same type of attraction several times. Therefore, for instance, visit Rothenburg ob der Tauber and skip Dinkelsbuehl and Noerdlingen, two other medieval completely walled towns.

I think it best to have reservations for hotels by Neuschwanstein and Rothenburg. If you would like to stay in a castle from the 1100s, look at www.burgkatzenstein.de , unfortunately only in German, but should be understandable about the rooms.

If you stoipped and saw all the excellent sights along the way, you would probably not get too far into Germany, which has ovedr 30,000 castles and palaces alone.

I wish there was a thank you button at the bottom of each of your posts like I have seen in other forums but since ther isn%26#39;t I%26#39;ll say thank you here. You have been so helpful. We will rearrange the schedule bearing in mind the points you have made and I%26#39;ll start reviewing the accommodation in Hohenschwangau, Saltzburg and Rothenburg so that we can book in advance.
