Taking a One Day shore excursion to Berlin

My family and I are cruising to Warnemunde on August 3rd and would appreciate any suggestions on %26quot;must see%26quot; attractions during our time there. We are contemplating a shore excursion with DenRus that picks us up at the ship and takes us (30 people) to Berlin. (1) I would appreciate any comments on this company/service and (2) If you were spending one day in Berlin, what would you do/see to make your time there most memorable?

Go to the top left hand corner of this forum page and where it says %26quot;Search%26quot; enter %26quot;Warnemuende to Berlin%26quot; There are numerous comments, mostly advising against taking this trip, especially with a non-cruise ship tour. There are also suggestions for alternatives.

hey mr. trash,

i know most people think it is a bit of a rush to take this excursion to Berlin, but i am a huge fan of the city of Berlin, and i don%26#39;t know when you might get another chance to visit it - this might be a once-in-a-lifetime-opportunity, so i wouold go for it!

this site may help you to choose your %26quot;must see%26quot;:

Based on the forum here, many who do a rush tour in half a day through Berlin are often disappointed. It is mostly not a %26quot;cute%26quot; or romantic place, it is interesting and vibrant and has a lot to offer but not from the windows of a tour bus.

Those on this forum who stay for a few days tend to fall in love with the city, though.

Stay near the coast, and come again later, this time directly to Berlin. It will be there - and Berlin is not an expensive place to visit.

I fully second altamiro%26#39;s statement.

Berlin was never built as a capital to impress on first sight. Even before WWII.

Unlike e.g. Paris or Vienna.

I don%26#39;t really get your point (2). The DenRus tour will include a bus tour through Berlin. And at least some kind of a tour is a must, albeit I prefer the walking tours.

The DenRus tour:

Photo stops: Brandenburg Gate, Reichstag, East Side Gallery, Opera Square, WW II Memorial, Charlottenburg Palace, Checkpoint Charlie, Kurfürstendamm (Ku%26#39;damm) where we stop for some free time for personal time in Berlin and/or souvenir shopping, etc.

Drive-by: Unter den Linden Boulevard, Alexander Square, Museums Island, the former Jewish quarter, the Humboldt University, KaDeWe, Kaiser-Wilhelm-Memorial-Church, Europe centre, Tiergarten Park, Victory Column, Bellevue Palace, Berlin Cathedral.

These drive-bys are in parts completely useless (e.g. Museums Island, KaDeWe). And a photo stop is as the name says good for a photo.

I fully understand why it is NOT a good idea to try to see the real Berlin in a short day trip, most of which will be spent in transit. However, your reasons for wanting to see it are not altogether unrealistic. Perhaps check this other option: SPB Tours as described below, perhaps also for your St. P. days in port.

Several on our cruise used spb-tours.com. This company is run by Viktoria, who does the St. P. tours, and her husband, who does the Berlin tours from Warnemuende. Check their site to see if you could get an individualized rather than %26quot;see-it-all%26quot; tour as described above. We didn%26#39;t go to Berlin as I had just been there in May; we wanted to visit several cities in the former DDR on our own, but I can understand that you want to provide your teen children with something that they seem to be very interested in.

There are many positive posts about SPB in the cruise critic part of the TA site.

Hope this helps...I booked with Alla in St. P. and thought they provided an excellent tour for 3 days in St. P.,, but also thought Viktoria and Stefan with SPB sounded more personalized than the larger Denrus and Red October.

It sounds like you are planning a great family voyage. Have a great time!
