We have 6 days to spend in Rhine Valley area during May 2009.
We are thinking of staying in Oberheimbach near Bacharach at Hotel Bergschlosschen.
We would appreciate any feedback on :
1. suitability of this area to do day trips on the Rhine
2. Any comments on hotel would be great.
3. A suggested itinerary including the %26quot;must sees%26quot; would be a huge help

I cannot comment on this hotel but Bacharach is a lovely town to visit. However, as a base for exploring the Rhine (and the Mosel also) I would highly recommend you consider Koblenz. Koblenz has a major train and bus station which makes it very easy to get around. Some places on the Rhine worth seeing (there are many) are:
Cologne - Dom Cathedral - Old Town - Gestapo Headquarters
Koblenz - Old town - Deutsche Eck
Rudesheim - Drosselgasse - Wine tasting
Bonn - Beethoven museum
Braubach - Marksburg castle
The following websites have the train/boat info.

Hope this helps.

Oberheimbach is not on the Rhein but near. If you are traveling by car, it should work to travel the Rhein.
It looks like an attractive wine growing village:

There is limited bus service during the week. It appears to be about a 5 km walk from Bacharach.

I have been on horseback through the area near Oberhiembach. It is a very small village inland from the actual Middle Rhine Valley. If you are interested in doing day trips, or want to be on the Rhine, it wouldn%26#39;t provide that convenience. It is in a very agricultural location, surrounded, of course, by vineyards. There is no view of the Rhine, though the area is very pretty and non-commercial.
There are many hotels directly on the Rhine that are in small villages, such as at Assmannshausen, around the corner from Ruedesheim on the other side of the river, or Bacharach, Boppard, and those listed by the previous poster. I have stayed at several in various locations in the area, from a small Gasthaus to a castlehotel. If you wish more info, post back and I%26#39;ll provide a list of places I know personally and can recommend.
That said, if you are interested in staying somewhere way off the beaten path and will have a car, then Hotel Bergschlosschen would do nicely.

Dear Linnmac, Trikist %26amp; Camjar %26amp;
Thanks for your helpful info.
We would appreciate your recommendations as to accommodation.
Based on what you have said, we are now thinking 2 nights in Cologne %26amp; 4 nights in a central location where we can cover the main attractions.
We will be travelling by boat %26amp; train

I have stayed in Koblenz twice, years ago, and liked the town. It does have excellent transportation connections.
Looking forward to this spring, the hotels in Koblenz seem a bit more expensive than some in the area. We have reserved rooms in both Bacharach and St Goar (passing through the area twice). The hotels were recommended in Rick Steves book and on this website.
Bacharach:

St. Goar:

I have no experience with either hotel yet except by email.

I%26#39;m happy to provide you with some personal Hotel/Gasthaus recommendations. I have stayed in the Rhein area fairly frequently over many years as I often visit friends/family in the area and like to stop over either going or coming...
Villages on the Middle Rhein:
Oberwesel--not as %26quot;quaint%26quot; as Bacharach, but very nice with an intact medieval wall paralleling the Rhein. The Weinhaus Weiler (weinhaus-weiler.de) is a traditional German guest house, with an excellent restaurant. I have stayed there many times. Also, if you want a castle stay for a night (though a hike uphill if arriving by train--which I have done), there is Burghotel %26quot;Auf Schoenburg%26quot;. You can link to their site by going to oberwesel.de (I can%26#39;t find their website address right now). Both places are locally-owned by the same families over generations.
On the other side of the river, right next to where the river boats dock, is Rhine Hotel-Cafe Post, which has a nice terrace restaurant, pleasant too for just sitting and sipping in the evening. They have an English language website at rhine-hotel-rudesheim.com. It is actually in Assmannshausen, just around the bend from Ruedesheim. R. is rather more touristy IMHO than A. In A., there is a chairlift which will take you up to the Jagdschloss, a very old hunting lodge. I have stayed there too, but was with a riding group. It%26#39;s not easy to get to without a car. However, from the Jagdschloss, you can hike thru the woods to the Niederwalddenkmal, and then take an aerial tram over the vineyards down to Ruedesheim, walk thru it, and return by train to A. BTW, It has been a number of years since I stayed at the Post, so check current rec%26#39;s for them. I also stayed once at the Hotel Krone in A., a huge splurge. It is a very lavish old hotel, rahther upper-crust, if you know what I mean, but with incredible hallways filled with antiques and enormous rooms with marble bathtubs. It was built in the 1800%26#39;s, as I recall, for the first Rhein tourists out of places like the UK.
Local and distance trains and the river boats stop at both villages, as well as many others. There are many hotels in Boppard, but it, like Ruedesheim, are popular with large tour groups so I avoid them. Bacharach is charming and worth a visit, but I don%26#39;t have an overnight rec. for it, as I have stayed in little B %26amp; B%26#39;s just overnight prior to going to the airport and don%26#39;t recall a name.
Do a search under Middle Rhine (or Rhein) Valley, for many others%26#39; comments on hotels and also sights to see such as the Msrksburg, Rheinstein, etc. All are very accessible for a 4-day visit. As another post staed, if you stay in Koblenz, you have the best train access not only to the Rhein, but also for day trips on the Mosel, as rail connections are excellent thru Koblenz, which is a hub.
Lots of places to enjoy great wine, too...though I know Australia is doing nicely in that respect, as well as Washington State, where I live now. The difference is the ambiance of those incredible terraced vineyards, some dating back to the Romans...
Cheers, Linn

There are many choices of hotels/guesthouses up and down the Rhine/Mosel of varying quality and price. If you are looking seriously at Koblenz you may want to check out these hotels. Close to the train (and bus) station are the Ibis and Mercure; from there you have about a ten minute walk into the city centre. In the heart of Koblenz are the Metropole and the Kurfurst. They are both walking distance to the Rhine/Mosel. Copied links below and you can check out the TA hotel reviews on each for customer feedback. Hope this helps.
