Hello! I will be accompanying my boyfriend on his business trip to Freiburg for a week in October. We have things planned for the weekend, but I%26#39;ll be alone every weekday and a few evenings.
I definitely want to get out and explore during the day, but I don%26#39;t know the first thing about Freiburg or the surrounding area, and I%26#39;m a bit nervous about going out and about alone. So do you know if there are any...
- tour groups in the area?
- nearby cities with easy/bus train routes that will be easy for a non-german-speaking person to figure out?
- cafes in a great spot for people watching/taking in the scene?
- museums you%26#39;d recommend?
- dangerous areas a young woman who%26#39;s alone should stay away from?
- tips in general you%26#39;d have for me?
Thanks in advance!

Freiburg is one the safest cities in all of Germany and very friendly to Americans. It is much like Cambridge as it is full of students and caters to them. It is also a city you will enjoy at night with many places to sit outside when the weather is nice. Walk to narrow streets and shops of Freiburg during the day and enjoy it. Another way to see Freiburg is on bike.
Another place to visit would be Strasbourg which is not too far away.
Safety will not be a problem in Freiburg.

You can visit places in the German state of Baden-Wuerttemberg and also Basel using the Baden-Wuerttemberg day train ticket which is 18€ for one person. It also covers most local transportation such as buses, U-bahns, and trams. There are two restrictions: no travel before 9AM on a weekday; and only regional trains can be used (no ICs, ECs or ICEs). You can use this ticket to explore the Black Forest, Baden Baden, Heidelberg, Basel, or other places. Check first to see if this ticket would save you money or whether normal tickets would be cheaper. Train information can be found on www.bahn.de , then change the language to English.
A few useful websites:
Black Forest www.schwarzwald-tourismus.info
Baden-Würtemberg www.tourismus-bw.de and www.schloesser-und-gaerten.de for the castles, palaces, monasteries and gardens operated by this state
You should also visit the tourist office in Freiburg. They will have a lot of excellent free information and you can also ask their advice and recommendations.
Germany is a very safe place, just take normal precautions.

%26gt;nearby cities with easy/bus train routes that will be easy for a non-german-speaking person to figure out?%26lt;
As markopolko suggested, don%26#39;t miss Basel, Strasbourg and Baden-Baden. Colmar is another sight worth seeing.
Staufen is a quaint little town, 20km to the south:
www.staufen-im-breisgau.de/index_gb.html
The Baden-Wurttemberg ticket is valid as far as Basel SBB train station, but not for the trams and buses in Basel. And it is not valid for Strasbourg and Colmar.
There is a scenic train route up to the black forest:

From: FR
To: Titisee Bahnhof
%26lt;cafes in a great spot for people watching/taking in the scene?%26lt;
Stroll about Universitaetsstrasse/Loewenstrasse/Bertholdstrasse etc.
%26gt;museums you%26#39;d recommend?%26gt;
The best museums hereabouts are to be found in Basel:
www.museenbasel.ch/en/institution/index.php…
The Museum Tinguely is unique and real funny:

Baden-Baden:

Black forest:

%26gt;dangerous areas a young woman who%26#39;s alone should stay away from?%26lt;
non issue

I am currently in Basel and wanted to visit Freiburg. I will also travel by myself. These are great suggestions. I am glad I came to tripadvisor first. You folks have helped me tremendously.
