We%26#39;ll be in Frankfurt, Munich %26amp; Nuremburg in Dec. Of these 3 cities, which is the best to take a day trip to Rothenburg? (via train or bus?)
We thought of doing a circle (all via train) between Frankfurt, Nuremburg, Munich, Rothenburg, Frankfurt, but it looks like the train from Munich to Rothenburg is 6 hours and another 2 1/2 to Frankfurt, yet, we could return from Munich directly to Frankfurt on ICE for only 3 hours. So I%26#39;m not sure if stopping in Rothenburg between MUC %26amp; FRA is the best plan. We definitely want to include Rothenburg in our trip (either for a day or overnight).
Thank you for any insight you all can give!

If these are the only places you%26#39;re planning to visit, why not fly into Frankfurt and home from Munich with an open jaw airline ticket. This will save time backtracking. Rothenburg can be done as a day trip from Nuremberg, and I believe it is in the local Nuremberg transportation area for inexpensive tickets. Why not spend the night there, as the character of this small town changes for the better with the departure of the tourist hordes.
As Rothenburg, Nuremberg, and Munich are all within Bavaria, you can use a Bavaria group (2-5 people)train day ticket to inexpensively travel between places, on the order of 28-30€.

Rothenburg is best done as a day trip from Nuremberg. It%26#39;s even part of the VGN, the local public transport network of the Greater Nuremberg region. There is a day ticket TagesTicket Plus covering the whole VGN area for EUR 14,20 and good for 1-6 persons, albeit only 2 of them must be older than 18 years.

%26gt; from Munich to Rothenburg is 6 hours
No. You%26#39;ve probably queried for the wrong Rothenburg.
Use with the DB timetable
To: Rothenburg ob der Tauber Bahnhof
Rothenburg is on a branch line and also this one ends only at a secondary railroad. If Rothenburg would not have been in a remote location for centuries it would not be today the place you want to visit.

Like Marco, I would suggest Rothenburg ob der Tauber as an overnight stay. It has a wonderful atmosphere at night during the advent season. I am not a great photographer but my pictures will give you some idea:

If you squeeze it between Frankfurt and Nürnberg, you can take advantage of the great deal on VGN tickets between Rothenburg ob der Tauber and Nürnberg.
We were in Rothenburg the first week of December and, while busy with tourists, it was not overwhelmed with tourists as it can be in the summer.
Regards, Gary
