Bus or train from Luebeck to Hamburg

Hi all,

Anyone in the know that can say which would be the best option from the two above. Which would be the quickest and which would leave me more central. The price is not an issue.

Many thanks,

Willowone.

Indeed not, as the SH tariff applies. A zone to zone local public transport tariff. Thus same price for trains and buses. Thus: no (slower) buses parallel to train routes.

Single ticket is EUR 11,50.

With this ticket you can travel e.g. by bus in Lübeck to the central station. Than by regional trains to Hamburg. And there by S-Bahn, U-Bahn, ferry or bus to your final destination in Hamburg.

I would just like to add that the bus station in Hamburg is right across the street from the central station (Hauptbahnhof) so it doesn%26#39;t make a differnce if you want to arrive in the city centre.

Thanks very much for the replies but I messed up when I didnt mention that I needed to get from Luebeck airport to Hamburg. I have checked some timetables but I must be doing something wrong as I just cant get my head around it. Anyone able to help simplify it for me? It would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks again,

Either train or local bus (#6) to Lübeck Hbf (main railway station). There you%26#39;ll have to change to Hamburg. Same ticket needed (price and conditions) like I wrote in my first answer. As said before this ticket is valid from anywhere in Lübeck to anywhere in Hamburg.

From Lübeck Airport you%26#39;ve also the option of a (private) shuttle bus to Hamburg.

This ticket is only valid for this bus and does not cover onward travel inside Hamburg.

The responses you have received are well-meaning, but over-complicated. I presume you are flying with Ryanair. If so there is a shuttle bus that will take you from just outside the very small Luebeck terminal direct non-stop to Hamburg Central Bus Station (ZOB). It costs 9 euros single, 18 return. It is comfortable and takes just over an hour. If your flight is late, the bus will wait until it arrives. This avoids the need to go into the centre of Luebeck, though if you have never been, it is well worth a visit. For the return trip, the bus will depart from the ZOB about two hours and 45 minutes before your flight departure time. The bus station has good facilities for refreshments etc.

The ZOB is opposite the main railway station (Hauptbahnhof) where you can find the Hamburg Tourist Info office where you can buy excellent value Hamburg travel cards for use on buses, U-Bahn and S_Bahn, river boats with discounts for museums etc. On the far side of the station you are right in the main shopping streets of Moenckebergstrasse and Spitalerstrasse.

I hope this helps and that you have a great time in Hamburg. If you have any other questions please ask.

Thanks a lot Bigbear. That is of great help and you are correct in assuming that I am flying with Ryanair. The shuttle bus seems to be the best option as the hotel I am staying at is near the main train station so that should be ideal. It all works out actually as my flight leaves 2hrs 45 mins after check out! I presume that Ryanair offer the tickets on board? Do you have any good ideas of what should not be missed around the beginning of February?

Thanks again,

Willowone.

Hi Willowone,

Glad to help. No, Ryanair don%26#39;t sell the bus tickets on the plane (surprisingly perhaps because they try to sell just about eveything else), but you buy them from the driver as you board the bus.

Nothing really leaps to mind for early February. Try the local Tourist Info for updates on events/shows/sports etc., http://www.hamburg-tourism.de/en/ For music try www.eventim.de and click on %26quot;Hamburg%26quot;. What are your interests/age group and are you travelling with friends? Also, how long are you staying? Then maybe I can make some suggestions to get the best from your visit.

Let me know the name of your hotel and I can suggest some areas to visit for restaurants/bars etc. and perhaps more importantly, those to avoid.

Best wishes!

Hi bigbear.

I wil be travelling with a large group of guys ranging from 25 to 35 for 2 days at the beginning of February. We will be staying in the Accor suite hotel about 1km from the main railway atation according to its details. It looks good and we have got very reasonable rates but you never can tell until you go. Any more help that you can give me would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Willowone,

Would your group be anything to do with CorkKev who is a bit concerned about the proximity of your hotel to the Gay Area of Hamburg? If so please tell him and/or his mates that Gays don%26#39;t usually bite unless you ask them to!!

Your hotel is about 15 minutes walk from the main rail station at the end of a street called Steindamm and you are 10 minutes walk from the bus station. There is a U-bahn station right outside the hotel. The area of town is called St Georg/Hohenfelde and is a fascinating mix of ethnic groups with loads of cheap restaurants and cafes (useful if you don%26#39;t get breakfast in your hotel). St Georg has been known as the %26quot;Gay Quarter%26quot; for a long time, but you won%26#39;t really notice unless you are specifically looking for gay bars. For a bunch of bogtrotters (I%26#39;m Irish so I can say it) out on the lash, I suspect you will be seeking other entertainment!!

The train station end of Steindamm is a bit seedy, and I suggest you avoid all the restaurants on Kirchenallee opposite the train station. They are tourist rip-offs and the food is pants. Just across from your hotel is Lohmuhlenstrasse and a big hospital. Walk to the end and turn left into Lange Reihe (about 250 metres). This is the centre of St Georg and has lots of good restaurants and bars. Casa di Roma on Lange Reihe is a very good up-market Italian restaurant, Vasco di Gama opposite is Portuguese, and Frau Moeller%26#39;s Pub, known to many as Molly%26#39;s is a great bar, it%26#39;s very much a real German boozer with footy on big screens at weekends and it gets packed(Corner Lange Reihe/Schmilinsky Strasse). Good beer (Jever, Duckstein and Guinness all on tap)and simple cheap grub such as a big plate of fried spuds with eggs for about 6 or 7 euros. And some pretty barmaids! Oh yeah, and it%26#39;s open till at least 4.00 am at weekends. What%26#39;s not to like?? For fast food just go to the Hauptbahnhof inner concourse...everything from Bratwurst to Fish and Chips via Syrian and Greek food, and all very good quality and value.

As a large bunch of lads, I reckon %26quot;Culture%26quot; won%26#39;t be top of the agenda and I guess St Pauli and the Reeperbahn will feature some time over the weekend. It%26#39;s tacky but a good laugh. Avoid %26quot;Cabaret%26quot; clubs on Reeperbahn itself and any joint with %26quot;Barkers%26quot; outside trying to get you in as these are all rip-offs. If you can%26#39;t see in, don%26#39;t go in. Grosse Freiheit has some good bars and clubs, most of which claim that the Beatles drank or played there. And if you go anywhere near the Herbertstrasse, make sure you all go to confession and/or the clinic when you get home.

Other tips: boat trip round the harbour is worth doing, as is a stroll round Speicherstadt the old warehouse area, or at least what%26#39;s left of it. Go see the NikolaiKirche. As a war memorial it%26#39;s powerful stuff, and a fantastic view from the top. Do the hop-on/off bus tour to get the best overview of a really great city. Schanzenviertel is a %26quot;new%26quot; area with a great buzz. Hotel can tell you how to get there. For local info ask any of the staff in Mollys. They are all young and speak good English.

Hope you all have a great time.

Hi bigbear,

Are you Columbo in disguise? Your powers of deduction are first class. I am in the same group as the other poster alrite, good spot. All of the information that you have given is brillant and answers lots of questions that I had. Thanks for going into such detail and by what you say there should be something to suit all the different tastes. I would say that should cover it but I will be on again if anything comes up. I will post a report when I get back.
