Where would be the most interesting place to base myself for a weekend/3 night break in late March. I would be flying in to Frankfurt Hahn Airport?
I would be interested in architecture, food and a few nice bars for a quiet drink before an early night!

Trier %26gt; Mainz %26gt; Koblenz IMO.
Trier is the oldest city in Germany and was the auxiliary capital of the Roman Empire for a while, with architecture dating back, in part, to that time.
As to the bars, Trier is a small city with a big university and all that entails...

Trier %26gt; Mainz %26gt; Koblenz AIMO.

I would select Trier, especially if I were to arrive in Hahn. Lots to see there, and good places to eat and drink.

You can%26#39;t go wrong in any of these places. Mainz has a lovely old town and perhaps the best bars, Trier the most interesting architecture. Koblenz is fairly modern but has a nice old town area.
But if you want a BASE for daytrips, the choice is clearly Koblenz, where you can easily catch a train to both the other cities and many other destinations in between.

If I had 3 days and was flying into Hahn, I would use Trier as my base. Head from Hahn over to the Mosel, stop in Cochem or Bernkastel Kues take time to sample some of the wine, maybe a quick cruise (couple of hours) on the Mosel. Once in Trier spend a day taking in the sights and if you have a vehicle get to Luxembourg and see the American Cemetery (Gen. Patton is buried here). Koblenz is nice, but I think Trier is pretty cool too.

Trier of course ! For reasonable priced good food and beer from the source, a genuine local atmosphere, go to Bitburger Brauhaus (Wirtshaus) at the Kornmarkt.

Thank you for your suggestions. We went to Lubeck in early April last year and the weather was bad. Wet and cold. As we try and include Germany every year in one of our trips we are thinking that we will leave Germany until late April before travelling there.
Would Trier, Koblenz or Mainz weather be any better in LATE APRIL.
|||
Lived in Germany for 8 years and you always have the possibility in March or April (and May) of having a whole week of nothing but cold and rain. I remember it snowing on May 7th one year. Pick your date and hope for the best..
|||
On the other hand the temp can reach the 20 C%26#39;s and Nature giving it a hard push to get the blossoms going.

The last half of April is definitely Spring and the weather can be quite warm. The first half of April snow is somewhat of a possibility, especially at higher elevations. I%26#39;ve attended Stuttgart%26#39;s Fruehlingsfest (late April to early May) the last four years, and the weather has always been warm then, sometimes very pleasant, although some rain is always a possibility.
