Marquartstein

Hello. My son will be attending a Goethe Institute language camp in Marquartstein in July of 2009. Can anyone recommend hotels, guesthouses, or apartments in the area where I might stay while he is at the camp? I would also appreciate any suggestions about sights and places to see during my three week stay in the area. I will be traveling with my nine year old son while my older son is at the camp. We visited Legoland and the King Ludwig Castle last summmer. Thank you. Betsy

Just to the north is the Chiemsee (lake) with Ludwig II%26#39;s version of Versailles, Herrenchiemsee, on an island of that name. On the neighboring island is a convent. To the SE lies the Koenigssee nice for a scenic boat ride, and Salzburg. A few fun things to do in and around Salzburg: visit the bishop%26#39;s water gardens at Heilbrunn (spelling?) where he liked to play tricks on his guests with water; the salt mine from either the Austrian or German side; and the ice caves at Werfen to Salzburg%26#39;s south, Werfen also has a nice real castle (not palace). Of course, you have your choice of many places in both the German and Austrian Alps.

Perhaps you and your nine-yr-old would enjoy a farm stay. These seem to be very popular in Bavaria. You can stay in either a furnished apartment or in a room on a farm. They are usually very family-friendly and the price is very reasonable. We stayed on a farm north of Lake Chiemsee two years ago and had a wonderful time. The apartments rent by the week and if you%26#39;re interested now would be the time to reserve one. A good website for farm stays is www.bauernhof-urlaub.com.

Go to www.bensbauernhof.com. It is in English. Go to %26quot;Accomodations%26quot; , %26quot;Bavaria%26quot; and there to %26quot;Other Locations.%26quot; The listings for Prien, Grassau, Unterwoessen are all near Marquarstein, and connected to M. by bus. We have stayed a couple of times at the farm in Unterwoessen. Very nice and scenic, but a bit of an uphill walk from the bus station. Once up there, it is a plasant and easy walk directly to the school in Marquartstein.

PS: Write or fax to the tourist offices in Marquartstein, Unterwoessen, Schleching and ask them to send you their prospectus. These brochures have a listing of all the lodging places, by type and also show them on a map. On second thought, Grassau and Prien probably are too far from Marquartstein to repeatedly visit your son there.

To get the addresses, phone and fax #s of the these offices, check your local library (or take a sneak look at Barnes%26amp; Noble or Borders) for a Red Michelin Guide for Deutschland. It gives the details you need.

Two places your younger son will enjoy: (1) A visit to the Salt Mine in Berchtesgaden (train from Uebersee or Prien to Berchtesgaden, the bus toward Salzburg. The Salzbergwerk is bus stop)(2)The glider field in Unterwoessen. It%26#39;s an easy walk from the bus station.

I happen to have lived in Unterwoessen and my family still lives there
