Restaurants in Berlin

Hi,

My partner and I are going to Berlin for a weekend and want to eat in a really nice restaurant on the Saturday night. We%26#39;re staying in central Berlin, so would be good if it was pretty central - and would like to sample vaguely local food, not Japanese or Italian. Happy to pay for good quality food, and looking for a nice romantic atmosphere. We%26#39;re booked into Vau at the moment, but have read some less than impressive reviews. Any suggestions?

Have just come back from a long weekend in Berlin and we had three very nice meals, all German cuisine.

Most central was the Dachrestaurant (roof restaurant) next to dome of Reichstag building. We have had lunch there several times over the last 18 months and food has always been delicious. Sitting in the Wintergarten with Berlin silhouetted should be pretty romantic. Photos of restaurant on website www.feinkost-kaefer.de and also how to pre-book.

A new discovery for me this time was the restaurant by Charlottenburg Palace (within the gardens opposite Orangerie, though entry also from the street). We had lunch there on Friday and I%26#39;d certainly go back. There%26#39;s a bus from right opposite that takes you to/from Zoo station; U-Bahn is a bit more of a walk.

Finally, a local favourite: Altberliner, by Arkonaplatz in Mitte, on Fürstenberger Strasse/Wolliner Strasse corner. M1 and M12 trams at Zionskirchplatz is best transport option. U8 to Bernauer Strasse, U2 to Senefelder Platz involve a bit more of a walk. The dining room on the left as you go in is small and the most romantic of the three restaurants.

%26quot;Mommsen-eck%26quot; Is the house of 100 beers and has a great menu. Good German food, and the menu is also in English. A great relaxed atmosphere and a view of the street and little square just outside. It can be found on Mommsen St. Jump off at Charlotenburg S-Bahnhof go right under the bridge and walk straight down the street and you will see it on the left. I spent quite a bit of time in there on two of my three trips to Berlin! Good Irish pub next door that does an excellent breakfast. Good jumping off point for the Kufurstendamm. My fav Berlin bar.
