Have you already considered the wikitravel.org overview of Dusseldorf? There are quite good informations regarding a visit of Dusseldorf.

What type of kitchen you like?

For 4 days I would recommend to spend some time in the Dusseldorf City (city center/Altstadt/Media Harbour). On another day you can go half-a-day to Benrath Castle or Kaiserswerth (depending on the weather). Moreover, I daytrip to Cologne would be my recommendation.

So, where do I start? First of all, you must remember that Düsseldorf is located in the heartland of industrial Germany, and so you will see plenty of factories, power stations etc. as you approach. On the surface, it also appears not to offer too many %26#39;tourist%26#39; attractions, but in my opinion that only adds to its charm.

However once you delve a little deeper, Düsseldorf has plenty to offer and at least you know you are seeing a place %26#39;warts and all%26#39;, rather than some artificial environment designed specifically for the tourists.

Hopefully you will be staying fairly central. The public transport system is excellent, pick up a copy of the route map from the tourist information (opposite the main station). Single journeys are very cheap, but you might find a day ticket better value.

Assuming you have a head for heights, do go to the top of the Rhine Tower early in your trip. Assuming it is reasonably clear, you will get an excellent view of the city, the river and the surrounding areas.

Virtually everyone has heard of the Altstadt, and yes you should visit. However due to its popularity, it is also very touristy. In my view a better bet is to walk around the Media Harbour. Whilst some of the restaurants and bars here can be expensive, good deals can easily be found.

Cologne is easy to get to, and the cathedral is both stunning and right next to the main railway station. However the main shopping street there is just like any other in a major city.

Another place to visit is Wüppertal, if only to travel on the Schwebebahn, a suspended monorail that was built around 1900 (do a search on Wikipedia if you want to know more). Trains go direct from the main station in Dusseldorf.

Hope this helps.

For great views across the city take a trip up the Rheinturm.

A boat trip along the Rhein

If you are there on a Saturday then there is a carraige ride through the old town at 11.30 from Burgplatz. Bear in mind that you need to pre book your tickets in the tourist office on Marktplatz.

It%26#39;s also nice to walk along the Rhein Promenade from Burgplatz to the Mediahafen area.

To eat there is a very good restaurant called Sila Thai.
