We%26#39;d love to visit see the Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau castles, August %26#39;09. We%26#39;ll be getting into Munich from Florence. Rather than hanging in Munich, would using Neuschwanstein as a base be a good idea? We have 3 days, 2 nights. Our next stop is Salzburg.
How long is the train ride from Neuchswantein to Salzburg? I don%26#39;t suppose it%26#39;s a straight shot, nonstop train.
Thanks for any help/suggestions.

dear beaverhousen,
please note: neuschwanstein is the name of the castle - the closest town is Füssen!
You can certainly use Füssen as a base, using one day to check out Neuschwanstein, one for Hohenschwangau, and one additional day maybe for Füssen or its beautiful surroundings or lakes.
there is no direct train from Füssen to Salzburg - you would have to change trains twice - total ride time approx 4 hours. there are direct trains from Munich, train ride would be about two hours!
have fun - tom

Füssen, the next close town and train station. A nice small town.

we used Fussen as our base for 3 days allowing us time to see Linderhof also. We saw both the parents castle and ludwigs castle in the same day. There was a wait tho%26#39; to see the parents castle since we were in groups.

You could use Fussen as a base, but I prefer Garmisch. From Garmisch you can get to Fussen, Oberammergau, Ettal, Linderhof and Mittenwald easily. I would recommend a day in Fussen/Neuschwanstein and 2 days in the Garmsich area. Stay in the Villa Jagerhaus while in Fussen (actually Neuschwanstein), beautiful view of both castles

Neuschwanstein would be a great base but I don%26#39;t think they will let you stay there. ;-)

ok, very funny, tripjunkie. Yes, we r staying in hohensgwangau at the jagerhaus! Thanks everyone for ur input.
One more thing, villa jagerhaus has a pkg for 365 euros per person for 2 nights. My 10 yr old will be another 160euros. Gd deal? They will gv us 2 b%26#39;fasts, 2 dinners, a Pte tour of just hohechwangau and of course the room! Shld we do our own thing n hv dinners elsewhere n just go buy tkts for both castles? In tht case the rate is 240 euros. No meals no tkts! Are there other places to hv dinner closeby?
Don%26#39;t know wht to do!

The restaurant in which you will eat is excellent, both for breakfast and dinner, but I don%26#39;t know what they will be serving you. They do a lot of flaming dishes as a maincourse or dessert. If it%26#39;s a several course dinner, then it%26#39;s probably worth it if you enjoy good food. If the castle tickets for both places are included it%26#39;s an even better deal, and a private tour is always excellent. As I%26#39;ve toured the inside of both palaces, whenever we go back it is just for the lovely views of Neuschwanstein from our room, we don%26#39;t repeat visit the interiors. All rooms have castle views, some are only of nextdoor Hohenschwangau, so make sure your room has a view of Neuschwanstein which is a work of art.

Don%26#39;t know what you budget is like, sounds like a reasonable deal. I am pretty low budget, stay at the Jagerhaus, room 62, corner room with view of both castles(170 Euro that time of year), have breakfast at the hotel for 12 Euro per person and for dinner I drive into Fussen (5 minute drive) and have dinner at the Pizzeria San Marco. Get to walk through Fussen in early evening get in some sights and San Marco is right on the pedestrian platz (review posted on TA). I did the group tour of the castle years ago and that was good enough.

Thx, Marco %26amp; Bwel. Really appreciate it.
We aren%26#39;t rentg a car. Is it worth going into fuessen?
Bwel, thx for the rm # tip! Awesome to hv two castle views.
We were supposed to go to V.Jagerhaus last yr n the rates this yr hv gone up alot. But if u think tht the dinners r worth it n there are no other restaurants in hohenschwangau then we maybe shld go with the %26#39;deal%26#39;.
So much for the bad economic times n people cutting back! Everything is startg to fill up n hotels r charging high rates!

Fussen is a nice little town, I enjoy going in and seeing the sights. Not on a %26quot;must see%26quot; list. A ride in via taxi (or bus) can%26#39;t cost but so much since it is so close. The bus is an 8 minute ride from Schwangau to Fuessen, probably 2 Euro. Just wanted to give you an alternative to the hotel, San Marco has great pizza and lasagne! Second floor restaurant looking out over the pedestrian platz.
On the positive side, the Euro is better than it was a couple of years ago. I was over there when in was like 1.59 to one dollar. Everything was about 20-25% more than now, and gas was about 30% more.
