frankfurt to black forest

Good evening,

My husband and I will be driving from Frankfurt to the Black Forest early May 2009. Can you suggest the best way to go and what are things we can see on the way. If anyone can recommend a nice hotel to stay a night in Black Forest that also would be greatly appreciated. Also what is there to see in the Black Forest area. Thank you

In early May you could make a slight detour on the way and visit Stuttgart ( www.stuttgart-tourist.de ) for the world%26#39;s largest Spring beer festival, Cannstatter Volksfest ( www.cannstatter-volksfest.de ). Stuttgart and its region also have a lot more to offer. If you chose to visit Stuttgart, a pleasant drive is along the Neckar River between Heidelberg and Stuttgart, with numerous pleasant small towns, vineyards, and castles.

May is a lovely time to visit. The chestnuts will be blooming in the beer gardens and there will be special asparagus menus, sometimes over 20 pages of these dishes.

The old college town of Tuebingen ( www.tuebingen.de ) is just a fairly short distance north of there and would be an excellent place to stay. Accomodation information can be found on the town%26#39;s website.

Hotel am Schloss is just below the castle in the heart of the old town. We%26#39;ve never stayed there but have just eaten lunch there when our favorite restaurant was closed (an excellent restaurant there is Die Forelle, about a block east of the market square in front of the Rathaus (city hall)). From the hotel, as you are up high on the castle hill, you may have a view. Tuebingen is less than an hour away from Stuttgart, so we have no real reason to stay there, but it is our favorite place in Germany to repeatedly visit.

Markopolko%26#39;s suggestions and the black forest region could easily be combined with the beautiful Alsace region in France.

I would consider a route like:

Frankfurt-Baden-Baden-Strasbourg-Haut Konigsbourg Castle-Ribeauville-Colmar-Freiburg-Titisee/Schluchsee-Hohenzollern Castle-Tubingen-Frankfurt.

Hello,

I am planning a trip to Frankfurt in early May as well and was interested in visiting the Black Forest area with one slight difference from the original poster - a car rental is not possible.

Is there any way my partner and I could visit and enjoy the area with public transportation? Are there any hostels or cheap accomodation in the area? We could stay for a day or 2.

I%26#39;m really excited to go there and would be truly disappointed not to.

The most interesting train route is (Frankfurt) - Offenburg - Triberg - Villingen - Donaueschingen - Titisee - Freiburg - (Frankfurt).

If you stay in one of these places, you%26#39;ll receive the KONUS guest card, which gives you free local public transport in the area of the above linked map. This means regional trains, trams (in Freiburg) and buses. The bigger places like Freiburg and Baden-Baden do however not take part in the KONUS program. Thus you don%26#39;t get this card when staying there.
