Day Trips from Berlin similar to somewhere like Görlitz

Hi I was wondering if anybody could recommend any nice and interesting places to go to that are are within a short travelling distance from Berlin City Centre. I have read that Görlitz is nice and it looks good on the web, but have found out that it is a 3 hour train ride away, which I think is too far for a day trip. Can anybody recommend anywhere similar? Thanks for your help.

There is many, and I also recommend using the search function of this forum to find previous discussions on day-trip destinations.

First of all, Potsdam is a beautiful city, almost a %26quot;must-see%26quot; in this area, and is practically a suburb of Berlin.

Dresden is a great city, which could be visited for more than 1 day and in fact be used as base for the Saxonian cities (like Goerlitz). But there are day trips from Berlin to Dresden

If coming in the summer, visit the Spreewald and small towns like Lubbenau.

Because of the superb motorway there and the fast trains (ICEs), Hamburg is also an option, and so is Leipzig.

Well, Görlitz is sort of unique in its state of preservation. There is hardly another town in the whole of Germany that beats it. Anyway...

Other places to consider might be

- Quedlinburg and Wernigerode on the Harz

- Wittenberg

- Potsdam has already been mentioned

Depends how much time you have in Berlin. With 4-5 days I would consider nothing beyond Potsdam. Which is directly outside of Berlin.

To Potsdam you need just a public transport ticket for the zones Berlin ABC.

Also in zone Berlin C is Oranienburg concentration camp memorial site. Interesting but does definitely not qualify as nice place.

Real gems like Görlitz, Quedlinburg and Wernigerode, some of the Hanseatic towns at the Baltic coast are all in similar distance from Berlin. Possible, but quite far for a day trip.

Hamburg and Leipzig are not closer but at least connected by fast ICE trains. This comes however for a price.

Abalada is correct, only one small thing - %26quot;Hamburg and Leipzig are not closer but at least connected by fast ICE trains. This comes however for a price.%26quot;

Actually, trains to Leipzig (and to Rostock) are pretty cheap, including the fast ones, because of the competition with Interconnex (a rival train company). At the connex site (or even at the Bahn site, they sell Connex tickets), you can buy a ticket to Leipzig for as little as 12 EUR one way (OK, this is the concession price for students, disabled and such; but 16 EUR for %26quot;normal%26quot; people).

|||

So, lylou, are you saying that you can buy tickets for the ICE Berlin-Leipzig for 16 Euro? I cannot believe it. However, that%26#39;s still 32 for round trip ticket.

Another vote for Potsdam. Everything else is too far away for a day trip IMO.

Yes I%26#39;d also suggest Potsdam as being more convenient for a day-trip, and with plenty to see.

Görlitz is really beautiful, restored thanks to masses of federal funding; in 1990 everything was terribly delapidated (I%26#39;ve got a Merianheft with the photos).

We visited Görlitz on a tour of eastern Germany we did summer 2007. We also liked Meissen and Naumburg particularly but none is good location for day-trip from Berlin.

Wittenberg is nearer but we haven%26#39;t been yet so can%26#39;t comment from personal experience. You could look at the piece about it in www.budgettravel.com. You can use a BerlinBrandenburg ticket on slower trains so not as expensive to get there.
