Hello
My husband and I will have a chance to drive around Bavaria for about three-four days, starting in Munich and ending in Salzburg. We would appreciate any suggestions for an itinerary that would allow us to experience the best of Bavaria. We enjoy walking around beautiful towns, admiring charming old streets and buildings, and soaking in the local culture. This is our first trip to Central Europe.
Thanks
Anne

It depends on whether en route you want to stay ina different place each night. If so, spend the first day en route to Lindau, Bodensee/Lake Constance. You can either go the direct route via the Munich - Lindau autobahn (A-96), or make a short detour from he autobahn at Weisling to Herrsching and Kloster Andechs, a Monastery with a wonderful church and a great place to taste Andechs beer and some of the food specialties of the area. You would return to the autobahn at Inning.
In Lindau, stay in the old town on the island. The next morning take a boat ride to Bregenz (Austria) and use the cable car to the top of the Pfaender mountain for a great view of the lake and the Swiss alps. In the afternoon, backtrack on the A-96 to exit 4, and take the B-308 road (Deutsche Alpenstrasse-German Alpine Highway) to Bad Oberstaufen, Immenstadt, Sonthofen, Hindelang and up the easy Oberjoch pass to the village of Oberjoch on the German- Austian border. From there, continue to Jungholz, Weissbach, Reutte and Fuessen. Stay there overnight and then either visit the Neuschwanstein castle from the outside and continue to Schloss Linderhof, or visit the castle interior on the obligatory conducted tur, and continue to Garmisch -Partenkirchen.
For either Linderhof or Garmisch, start on Route 179 toward Leermoos, except for Linderhof, get off the route at Bad Kreckelmoos and follow the road to the Plansee (Lake), Ammerwald, Linderhof. Visit that palace. Then continue on the road to the B-23. Take it toward Ettal, Oberau and then head for Garmisch and Mittenwald on the B-2. Stay overnight in M. Head on the B-2/Austrian 177 to Zirl and catch the A-12 Autobahn, going east, toward Innsbruck. Before you get on the autobahn, you MUST buy a vignette for the Austrian autobahns. You can get it at any gas station near the German/Austrian border.
Take the A-12 to the Oberaudorf exit (after Kiefersfelden)and follow the Route 172 to Koessen, and back into Germany and Reit im Winkl. There you pick up the Deutsche Alpenstrasse (B-305) again, and take it to Berchtesgaden, from where the B-305 takes you to the Austrian border and Salzburg.
If you don%26#39;t plan to return to Berchtsgaden from Salzburg as a day trip, stay in B%26#39;gdn and on the next day, take the road to the Obersalzberg parking lot, for the bus to the Eagles Nest (aka Kehlsteinhaus), provided you trip will be after late April. Bfore then it wll be closed because of snow.
I have on purpose not given you great details on the places I mentioned. You should read up on them and see if they appeal to you.
For the direct Fuessen (Neuschwanstein) Garmisch Route, stay on the 179 to Leermoos, and then take the 187/German B-2r to Garmisch and Mittenwald.
If you want to make fewer stops, skip Lindau and Fuessen and head directly from Munich to Oberau on the Autobahn A-95 and on to Linderhof. From there go in reverse order to Fuessen and Neuschwantein, and then Fuessen, Leemoos, etc.to Mittenwald.
I have driven all of these routes many times and they are good and , for the most part, very scenic.

Thanks Treplow, for the detailed reply. We were also hoping to go north and cover some of the Romantic Road via Rothenburg. Do you have any suggestions about this? We may be able to add a day (or two?)to the Germany leg of our trip to allow us to do this.
Is it too ambitious to try to do the entire Romantic Road in 3-4 days from one end to the other, if we pick up the car in Munich and end in Salzburg?
Thanks again
Anne

Yes. At the Romantic Road is in the opposite direction.
I would also recommend drive from Munich to Füssen (at least the end point of the Romantic Road) but follow from there the German Alpine Road towards Salzburg.

Anne, just be aware that you could be charged a drop off fee of a significant amount if you pick up in one country and drop off in another. If you are ending yout trip in Salzburg and if you take the advice offered to go to Bertchesgaden then maybe you could drop the car in B%26#39;gaden and take public transportation into Salzburg. It is a short distance between the two. Don%26#39;t forget to get the vignette sticker if you drive the autobahn or major highways in Austria. Can be purchased at stores close to the border. I have rented cars through gemut.com and can highly recommend them. They also have good information on their website about driving in those areas. Others have used Autoeurope and had good things to say about them. There is an affiliation between the two.

Berchtesgaden or Freilassing. Latter is rather like a suburb of Salzburg, but on the German side of the border. Both places are connected well by public transport with Salzburg.

No need to use the autobahn just for the few kilometers into Salzburg.
