We thought of pairing Munich with Belgium for our holiday middle of March. We have 4 or 5 days to spend there before we move to Belgium. My questions are..
1) March is still considered winter, do we need special shoes for walking, if still its snowing?
or a normal rubber shoes will do? will it be slippery?
2) what type of train ticket will suit us (2 person)
will Bavaria ticket work for us?
3) Is there a good train connection to Brussels?
or flying is still a better option.
4) How shall we divide our days among must visit places?
Thanks a lot for your help.

I do not think you will need %26quot;special%26quot; shoes, but chances are good that it will be cold. Snow is also a possibility.
The overnight train from Munchen to Brussels is a very good option. You save on a hotel that evening: Please see: www.db.de/
I would spend more time in Munchen than Brussels. Perhaps 3 days in Munchen, then take overnight (departs around 11pm) to BRU..

Spring starts official on 20. March.
It can be either a later winter (but snow won%26#39;t stay for long anymore) or early spring with nice temperatures.
Normal rubber shoes will do.
2) what type of train ticket will suit us (2 person)
%26gt; will Bavaria ticket work for us?
What are you plans?
Bavaria Ticket is good for day trips inside Bavaria, e.g. to Füssen/Neuschwanstein.
For getting around in Munich or from/to Munich Airport use MVV partner day tickets.

3) Is there a good train connection to Brussels?
Yes. But it%26#39;s not exactly close.
DB timetable
http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en
From: Munich
To: Bruxelles-Midi
4) How shall we divide our days among must visit places?
2-3 days for Munich, 3-2 days for day trips from Munich
Options are e.g.
Neuschwanstein Castle
http://www.neuschwanstein.de
to: Hohenschwangau
Herrenchiemsee New Palace
http://www.herrenchiemsee.de
to: Prien
to: Herreninsel
Salzburg
http://www.salzburg.info
to: Salzburg
Regensburg
www.historicgermany.com/regensburg.html
to: Regensburg
You can use the Bavaria Ticket for any of these trips. Keep in mind that the Bavaria Ticket is valid
Mo-Fr: from 9am till 3am next day
Sa,Su: from midnight till 3am next day
It covers also only regional trains. That%26#39;s however only an issue to Salzburg. To get only connections you can use with the Bavaria Ticket select at the DB timetable as means of transport %26quot;only local transport%26quot;.
Best way to Herrenchiemsee is by train to Prien station, walk the 1,2 km to Stock, the harbour of Prien. And from there by boat to Herreninsel island. The boats are not covered by the Bavaria Ticket. The historic railway connecting Prien with Stock does not run in March and the DB timetable ignores the option to walk this distance.

Hello everyone,
Thanks so much for all your replies. I have checked the DB Bahn and yes indeed its a long journey but the specific ticket price doesnt appear on the chart. Another option is flying Austrian Airlines 140 US$ return. Has anyone done the same way?
Thanks again.

Normal price for connections by ICE trains is EUR 150,20 in 2nd class. Specials start from EUR 39,00.
Of course with a good price there is no reason not to fly.

I know Brussels is supposed to be a good tourist place, but I never found much to see or do there (food is good though!).
We had a guidebook of walks, and did one on day 1. Then on day 2 we started another to find that it soon changed into most of day 1%26#39;s walk.
I think that Brussels itself is only a couple of days; other places like Brugge/ Bruges are OK, but again not for long.
Munich OTOH has much in the city to see, and plenty of things round and about.
(Sorry, Belgium!)

We are giving 4 nights in Munich, 3 nights in Salzburg, 4 nights in Belgium (2 Brussels - 2 Bruges).
We like to experience both the fast and slow pace type of sightseing. Variety for us is more enjoyable and at least a half day for shopping :-)
Is there any particular area you can recommend where we could hang out...cafes/bars with outside sitting considering the weather in March?
Also is there a Zoo in Munich?
Thanks again.

There is particlularly fine zoo in Munich. Take the bus from the middle of the Marienplatz square to %26quot;tiergarten%26quot;. (It is in Thalkirchen).
Could be cold in March- even snow - or could be warm.
A couple of years ago I went out twice in March; on one occasion by Nymphenburg palace (quite a nice little beer garden there, well sheltered) people were %26quot;curling%26quot; -playing a game on the frozen canal.
10 days later people were wandering bedside the same canal in shorts and with a suntan.

Snow would be additional treat, we dont have snow here in Dubai...
