i%26#39;m travelling from zürich to darmstadt next week and am thinking of stopping along the way or more or less close to this route (freiburg-stuttgart-karlsruhe-heidelberg-mannheim-(mainz-frankfurt)).
do you have suggestions or ideas about what might be interesting places to see and visit? we%26#39;ve got about four days. and, last but not least, i%26#39;m travelling with my kids (aged four and six) who are very enthusiastic about pretty much everything, but can only take a certain amount of museums and churches.
thank you!

Stuttgart would be a detour on this route.

Heidelberg

Mainz
e.g. the Gutenberg Museum of the Art of Printing offers workshops for kids. Also interesting (and free) the Museum of Ancient Shipbuilding.

In Stuttgart ( www.stuttgart-tourist.de ) the whole family would enjoy the excellent Mercedes Benz Museum (they also have race car simulators and you can sit in a F-1 race car in the basement), Wilhema ( www.wilhelma.de ) which is Europe%26#39;s largest combination zoo-botanical garden, a trip up to the observation deck of the world%26#39;s first modern TV tower, a visit to Kinderland in the Leuze mineral baths, Museum am Loewentor for the excellent collection of local dinosaurs and Ice Age mammals and also all kinds of creatures embedded in amber, looking through the telescope on clear nights at the small observatory on Uhlandshoehe, the planetarium, and the Wuerttemberg Museum in the Old Palace has a special pirates exhibition for children. Some of the small local parks have small climbing walls for children, and just walking up the many Staeffele (stairways) on the steep hillsides might be fun for them. You can also ride the cable car and the cogwheel railway.
All also should enjoy a visit to nearby Esslingen ( www.esslingen.de ) with its well preserved medieval center and the town walls can be climbed up the steep hillside to the %26quot;castle%26quot;. If you want to do some inexpensive shopping, nearby Metzingen ( www.metzingen.de ) has Germany%26#39;s most factory outlets.
On 14-15Feb in Schwaebisch Gmuend ( www.schwaebischgmuend.de ) will be the International Guggenmusik Festival with the colorful costumed bands from Germany, Switzerland and Liechtenstein playing their unique music which all should also enjoy.
If it wasn%26#39;t Winter, there are also some other outdoor children%26#39;s activities that they might enjoy such as the Fairy Tale Garden at the palace at Ludwigsburg, and Hoehenparkkillesberg in Stuttgart with its long minature train ride, climbable double helix tower (can also be climbed now if no snow or ice), long minature train ride, some children%26#39;s rides and also some animals that would appeal to children.
