Berlin suburbs

I have been to Berlin so many times that even all of my fingers and all of my toes could not sustain the full count. Such is my love for the German capital that I will travel there again this summer.

This time, however, I wish to explore some of the suburbs rather than just stay in the centre as I usually do. I have already been to the city of Potsdam and the Sachsenhausen concentration camp many times also. I have seen Spandau too and the Allierten-Museum in Zehlendorf.

Is there anything else at the outer areas of Berlin or just beyond that is of interest? What about Köpenick? Pankow?

Any suggestions welcome...

Koepenick would be indeed my first choice, especially if you%26#39;ll come in the spring or summer: except for the castle and the old town, which are beautiful enough, you%26#39;ve got plenty of water and nature activities there.

Karlshorst is where the %26quot;German-Russian Museum%26quot; is - it is a fascinating museum, definitely worth a visit.

A bit north from Karlshorst, and again ideal when the weather is fair, you%26#39;ll find Wuhletal (a beautiful valley to hike in); and further north, the gardens of Marzahn - there are Japanese, Chinese garden, etc.

In Hohenschoenhausen and in Lichtenberg you will find two of the most disturbing remainders of the times before 1989: the Stasi Museum and the Hohenschoenhausen Stasi Prison (as featured in %26quot;Life of Others%26quot;).

Pankow has several interesting Cold War sites as well, and there is also a nice park with a palace.

In Tegel and Reinickendorf (yes, I am going counter clockwise...) there is interesting industrial architecture, e.g. the Borsig Towers. In the Tegel Lake (again, in the summer), you can take a ferry to interesting tiny islands.

Spandau has been discussed before (although I am sure that you haven%26#39;t seen everything the area of Spandau and Charlottenburg has to offer), so let%26#39;s move on to Gruenewald - nice villa neighbourhood, with the Bridge Museum (as in Bruecke art movement, not the card game), the %26quot;Platform 17%26quot; Memorial, and the Jagdschloss Gruenewald (yet another palace, but this is the only remaining Renaissance era palace in Berlin).

South of Gruenewald (which is a forest, which means it is also a nice place to hike...), you%26#39;ll find Wannsee, with the notorious Villa Wannsee, but also many other interesting places.

In the south of Berlin, again lots of interesting industrial architecture, and also - in Britz, the Britz gardens.

On the shores of the Wannsee is also Max Liebermann%26#39;s Villa with beautiful gardens which he painted many times (a bit like Monet and Giverny).

Potsdam has loads of sights so there are probably places there you%26#39;ve still not visited.
