Am I looking at the wrong train schedules

Is there something I am missing. Everyone seems to say buy pt to pt passes, but they seem to run 80 to 100 euro per person. It seems you can get a Eurorail pass for around 410 dollars for three countries and 6 days in a month. There are three of us and we are planning to go from Zurich to Munich, Munich to Austria and back, and travel to a few other cities in Germany.

Where are you looking for your fares? A second class full fare single from Zurich tro Munich is about €65 each and there may well be cheaper fares if you book ahead.

Munich to Salzburg return can be done on a Bayern ticket for about €29 for up to 5 people.

€100 gets you quite a long way on a German train. For the official fares use bahn.de or sbb.ch

Thanks so much. I was looking at the eurorail pt to pt prices, but only a month ahead to get idea of the prices.

Check www.bahn de. for the website of the Deutsche Bahn, the RR system. It covers all of continental Europe.

$410 ÷ 6 = $68.33 per day

You can research train fares for travel within Germany or to/from Germany at the DB website. http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en

The ÖBB website will quote fares for travel within Austria. http://www.oebb.at/vip8/oebb/en/

The Bayern-Ticket is valid for 2nd class travel on Regional trains, buses and trams within the Ferderal state of Bavaria. This ticket is also valid for travel to Salzburg and Ulm. www.bayern-takt.de/public_main_modul.php…

There are several excellent railway offers in Germany ( www.bahn.de and change to English):

Lander tickets- valid for travel within German states and possibly a few places on their borders, a group ticket (2-5 people) for about 28€. On weekdays these are valid from 9AM to 3AM the next day, and on weekends from midnight to 3AM the next day. However, only regional trains can be used (no fast ICs, ECs or ICEs) and all local transportation within the state such as buses, trams, U-bahns and S-bahns are usually covered.

Schönes Wochende ticket- similar to the Lander tickets, but all regional trains are covered anywhere in Germany on Saturdays and Sundays. Local transportation may or may not be covered. Group tickets are about 35€.

If you purchase your tickets early enough (89 days at earliest) there are limited inexpensive specials for places within Germany and to places outside of Germany. For these, travel will be only on one particular train. Typical costs are 29€ or 39€ per person.
