Bike Hire in the English Garden

Hi

Quick question - I%26#39;ve had a look round on the internet and can%26#39;t find an answer...

I am visiting Munich in a few weeks, and thought it would be a nice idea to hire a bike for a couple of hours to explore the English Garden - does anyone know of anywhere where I can do this (near to the Garden so I don%26#39;t have to cycle through town (I prefer to walk and soak up the scenerey) and how much I would expect to pay for 1 or 2 hours?

Detox spas, in Germany.

I%26#39;m about to undergo several treatments of a special type of Chemo therapy due to my mestatic colon cancer to my lungs.

What I am looking for is a Holistic noninvasive cancer treatment that I can use in combined with my regular treatment of chemo.

I live in Ramstein, Germany now, so really anywhere in the surrounding area. Munchen, Heidelberg or Kaiserslaughtern

I just want to be as healthy as I can be during the chemo.

You might look at the website for Baden-Wuerttemberg tourism www.tourismus-bw.de . Baden-Wuerttemberg has more spas than any other German state, and many of them are health related. If you can%26#39;t find suitable information on their website, go to the brochure section on the German part of their website and have them send you for free Baden-Württemberg 2009 erleben which in the back has a list of spas in BW, many of them health related. If you plan to visit Baen-Wuerttemberg ever, it%26#39;a also the best source of things to see and do.

I don%26#39;t know if you speak German or not, but if you do, I think I would post this question over on the German board. You might start looking online under Heilpraktiker organizations.

Have you spoken to your Dr. about some recommendations? If you have a Heilpraktiker Dr. they should be able to give you some help in finding a place. Contact your insurance company too, as they will be able to find you places that they will cover perhaps.

Parking outside the green zone

We%26#39;re driving to Berlin tomorrow from Poland, and just came across the information about the need for a green sticker to driver/park in the centre. Since these have to be pre-ordered, it%26#39;s too late for us to do this, so it looks like we%26#39;ll need to park outside the centre and use public transport.

Since the car is a late-model BMW, my friend is concerned about security. Can anyone recommend a safe place to park on the east side of Berlin, outside the central zone? It would preferably be adjacent to a U/S-bahn or DB station.

Any suggestions would be most appreciated!

The Umweltzone covers the area within the Ringbahn. You could park at Südkreuz station which has DB and S-Bahn connections, and two very large indoor parking garages.

Try the parking lots near the Landsberger Allee S Bahn station. It is just outside the %26quot;Ring%26quot; and has good public transportation possibilities

I%26#39;ve been looking at the BVG route map, and it indicates that some stations have Park %26amp; Ride lots (for example, Friedrichshagen or Wuhletal). Does anyone know if you can leave cars overnight in such lots (e.g. from Friday night until Sunday afternoon?)

Is it posible to by one before we go or can we buy one in Germany/Berlin?

We live in Denmark and are driving over Hamburg to Berlin.

The umweltplakette can be bought at vehicle inspection stations in Denmark.

Perhaps the same can be done in Poland?

Good cafees in Charlottenburg?

Hi,

My wife and I travel to Berlin next week. We are staying at a hotel in Charlottenburg - near

Berlino, Kurfuerstendamm.

We don%26#39;t want to eat breakfast at the hotel. Can anybody recommend some good cafess with breakfast in this area?

Is it better to go with a tour group to Oberammergau?

I would like to take my grandkids to Oberammergau in 2010. My granddaughter also wants to see France. Would it be best to do our own thing or go with a group? I thought about seeing Switzerland, also. My Dad%26#39;s people were from there.

With a youngster, I would not go in a tour group. Too inflexible and usually too %26quot;verbose%26quot;, i.e. the guides cover more things in more detail than a child would appreciate.

Look into lying into an %26quot;open jaw%26quot; flight arrangement, flying into Zuerich and returning from Munich. Then you can go either by train, at least partially, or by car.

Depending how much time you have and from which area your father%26#39;s people are from, take the train from Zueric there, or take the train to Interlaken (Ost) and on to Grindelwald or Lauterbrunnen to visit that part of the Swiss Alps. Then take the train to Lindau (Germany) and pick up your car there and %26quot;do%26quot; the parts of Bavaria near Oberammergau - - - Fuessen/Neuschwanstein Castle, Linderhof palace (on the way to Oberammergau), Garmisch Partenkirchen. I assume you don%26#39;t plan to see the Passion Play in Oberammergau (not sure it is on in 2010). It would be quite hard on a child.

From what I have seen, the prices for the tours that include Obereammergau are punitive so I would go on my own.

train from airport

Hello,

It%26#39;s my first time in Berlin and i will be at Schoenefeld airport about eleven o%26#39;clock at night. I am wonderring if there is a train from the airport to the center of the city or it%26#39;s too late? If there isn%26#39;t how much it will cost a taxi?

It%26#39;s not too late for trains. The airport is anyway connected 24 hours by public transport.

Single ticket is EUR 2,80.

You can use any combination of local public transport to reach your destination in Berlin

- regional trains (RB, RE)

- S-Bahn

- U-Bahn (metro)

- trams

- buses

and even some ferries.

Taxi is EUR 25-35 depending where in central Berlin.

Things to see on drive from Munich to Frankfurt

Hi, my daughter and I will be driving from Frankfurt to Munich and then back to Frankfurt the last weekend in February. We only have Saturday and Sunday to visit Munich and surrounding. My thoughts are to take a tour to Salzburg on Saturday and then drive to Fussen (for the castles) before starting back to Frankfurt. Can you advise please things to do and see on the drive from Fussen to Frankfurt? From what I%26#39;ve read we would want to drive the Romantic Road, so if you could point out some sights along that stretch not to miss I would greatly appreciate it.

For a few days Munich, Salzburg and Fuessen are a fairly long way away, and you wouldn%26#39;t have much time to enjoy yourselves, you%26#39;ll be doing a lot of driving. You might limit yourself to the Rhine gorge NW of Frankfurt, or some of the Romantic Road.

The highlights of the Romantic Road are the Residence in Wuerzburg, the walled medieval town of Rothenburg ob der Tauber, and Neuschwanstein Palace by Fuessen. The Romantic Road isn%26#39;t romantic at all, just some places along it, so there is no real need to drive it to see the highlighhts, just use the A7 autobahn which kind of parallels it as it is much faster than a two-lane road. A short distance off of the A7 are also Ulm with its record height church spire, Ottobeuren with a beautiful church that contains more beautiful Baroque religious items than can be easily comprehended, and the Steiff Museum in Giengen who invented the teddy bear.

Although I would never recommend visiting many places on the Romantic Road in summer because of all of the foreign tourist hordes, in February there will be few of them and Neuschwanstein in the snow is lovely.

Booking Train Seats in Advance, December

Hi, my partner and I will be in Europe for our honeymoon in December this year.

I was wondering if it is adviseable that time of year to pre-book seats on all of our trains or will we be able to go to the station and jump on board.

We will be travelling on a Eurail Global Pass. In Germany, we will be doing the following trips - Innbruck to Munich, Munich to Nuremberg, and Nuremberg to Amsterdam.

Do you still pay a reservation fee if booking at the train station on the day?

Depends when in December. I%26#39;d for sure book seats for the one long leg, the Nuremberg-Amsterdam trip. Assuming that you are travelling first class with a Eurail pass, you won%26#39;t need reservations for the two shorter trips (unless it is a peak travel day like, for example, Dec 23...)

Of course you pay a reservation fee if you book at the station, and if you are unlucky there might even be no more seats available. Book these in advance.

We have had some Aussie posters here who had been told by their travel agents that a seat reservation costs more than 40 €. This is plain wrong and a ripoff. A seat reservation on DB trains is 4 € per seat when booked online on http://www.bahn.de, the website of German railways (English version available), the same price as at the station. Look up your connection and proceed as if you wanted to book tickets. At a certain point the system will ask you if you want a ticket with reservation, a ticket without reservation, or a seat reservation only - tick the third option.

Bookings can in theory be done 89 days in advance. Since the timetable changes in early December, however, you will have to wait till the new timetable is online, which usually happens in mid to late October.

Innsbruck to Munich

There are 2 routes. The main one via Kufstein and a more scenic one via Mittenwald.

On the Mittenwald route there are only regional trains where seat reservations are not possible at all. However as these trains start in Innsbruck it won%26#39;t be a problem to find free seats if you%26#39;re there in time.

Munich to Nuremberg

Needs just 1 hour by ICE. I would not reserve for this leg.

Nuremberg to Amsterdam

You can reserve seats for this trip e.g. already in Innsbruck or Munich.

Seat reservations online are only possible for domestic trips inside Germany. Thus in this case from Nuremberg to Oberhausen. The chance that your seat will be given to someone else for the rest of the trip is however small.

We are going to a Schalke match. How easy is it to get to Gelsenkirchen HBF after the match? Is it walking distance?

i asked a co-worker, a huge schalke-supporter. he said that it is quite far away, no walking distance. but there is a strassenbahn going directly from the hauptbahnhof to the veltins arena and reverse!

Apartment in Munich

I will be in Munich for 5 nights in June 2009. Traveling with wife, son, and his girlfriend. Rather than getting two hotel rooms, I am looking for more affordable option of renting an apartment for our visit. Would like to have someting centrally located. Any ideas?

Hi,

June is a beautiful time. You think of looking for the suburbs where you can get %26quot;Ferienwohnung%26quot;. These are small appartments with kitchen. Downtown Munich will not really offer this. If you look into the suburbs you can get to City Center by S-Banh within 25 Minutes and you have the country side with connection to the lakes and mountains.

Look at Hubmann on the south side of the river near tram and metro stops I believe. There are some positive reviews on this site and we are thinking of staying there later in year. ALternatively try the Holiday-Rentals site

HighTest Beer in Munich?

My DH likes his beer with a bit more alcohol. What type of beer should he order? What brand would you recommend?

Order the local beer served in the particular establishment you are visiting. (Most of the breweries in and around Munich have their own biergartens and/or restaurants).

Drinking in Munich isn%26#39;t for getting drunk -- it%26#39;s for appreciating the centuries-old craft of producing excellent beers.

Some of the Winter / Seasonal brews are higher (6.5 to 8.1 % ABV) that average beers. Most beer in Munich are indeed to be enjoyed, not intended for drunken contests.. Most are between 5.2 and 6.3%...

Also, a few of the Dopplebocks may be around 7%//

Here the restaurants/pubs tend to be tied to a brewery in many cases so brand isn%26#39;t the issue.

To go for high strength, often the dearest beers are the more potent. Also any that end %26quot;ator%26quot; tend to be interestingly strong.

In Augustiner places for example, Edelstoff is about 5.30 Euro per litre (yes, litre- which is why perhaps strong is not optimum for enjoyment) whereas the lower strength Helles is about 5.

Aventinus, not from Augustiner, is 8 per cent, so per litre could have interesting effect.

You can get light coloured beer, dark coloured beer, and also wheat beer (light or dark or intermediate) of varying strengths. Augustiner is often indicated as being a good brewery, but it%26#39;s all down to taste.

Also look for Starkbiers which are sold at many biergartens usually 6 to 8 % or maybe stronger. Some of the stronger beers are bottled so you may to ask and look out for some of the smaller breweries eg Andechs have a bar in the Frauen kirche area that has some excellent beers

Dusseldorf to Luneburg by train

A group of four of us will be in Dusseldorf in November and are wondering if its possible to catch the train from Dusseldorf to Luneburg with a one night stop on the way to explore somewhere new.

Can anyone advise if this is possible and suggest a spot to stop for one night.

Any help would be appreciated.

2 days in Munich

Hi all,

I%26#39;m planning a trip to Europe. I%26#39;ll be arriving in Munich in the late afternoon. But I%26#39;ll be spending two full days in Munich. I have 2 questions regarding this.

1. Will Munich be enough to keep me busy for 2 days or can I squeeze in a side trip to a neighboring city...maybe the Black Forest?

2. Is the area around the Munich HFB main train station generally safe? I plan on staying at a hostel close to there. I will be taking an early morning train from Munich to Paris.

If you want a side trip , Black Forset is too far , but Neuschwanstein and Garmisch is possible

Advise Needed: BMW Welt & Frankfurt Motor Show 2009

My wife and I are planning our 1st trip to Europe.

My wife wants to visit London %26amp; UK.

Being a car nut, I want to visit the BMW Museum, the BMW Welt %26amp; BMW Factory Tour in Munich.

I also want to visit the Frankfurt Motor Show 2009 which I understand is between September 15, 2009 to September 27, 2009 in Frankfurt.

I will arrive in London spend a week in the UK and then plan to go to Germany for 3-4 days before returning to London and flying back to Malaysia.

How best should I plan my trip?

Apart from BMW Factory Tour, what other factory tour are available for the public?

The IAA car show is fabulous and a lot of fun. It really needs a few days to see all of the halls. The biggest problem is finding a hotel room and the prices they charge for those hotel rooms. You might need to look in one of the surrounding towns for a room, like Mainz or Wiesbaden or Langen or Darmstadt. This is a HUGE fair. Your wife may want to spend her time at one of the many museums in Frankfurt or sightseeing, or she may enjoy the car show too, as it is so interesting. Shopping is always an option here too!

2 days Munich, train to Frankfurt, 2 days Frankfurt is for sure an option.

Main problem will be accommodation as you%26#39;ll find that

a) the prices going up considerably in both cities during these events

b) frequent visitors / exhibitors will have already secured their accommodation for 2009

Best options are most likely in places where you%26#39;ll have to commute 30-60 minutes into Munich/Frankfurt. Check your options e.g. with

If you have secured accommodation you can plan things like transport other sightseeing etc. There will be plenty of options.

Stuttgart has the excellent Mercedes Benz Museum ( www.mercedes-benz.com/classic )with 160 vehicles documenting the over 120 year history of the automobile and this firm. It%26#39;s easy to spend a half day there, and if you%26#39;re real interested, you probably could spend several days. Exhibits include Mercedes through the years, automotive improvements, and race and record setting cars. The building is nice architecturally and their is a time line as you spiral down between floors with world events since the invention of the auto (quite interesting in itself)- note Stuttgart is where it was invented. With pre-arrangement, you can also tour their motor factory nearby. (A few times a month they have special tours of the museum on varied topics.)Mercedes%26#39; largest assembly plant in nearby Sindelfingen can also be toured. It is best to make pre-arrangements through their European delivery program at their US website.

The above website also has information on Daimler%26#39;s reconstructed workshop in the Bad Cannstatt part of Stuttgart, and also Daimler%26#39;s home where he was born in nearby Schorndorf which now houses a museum that contains the world%26#39;s first motorcycle as well as other items dealing with his life.

The new Porsche Museum ( www.porsche.com ) is set to open this 31Jan and I believe will have 60-80 cars on display. Like the Mercedes Benz Museum, it is architecturally interesting besides the cars it contains.

One other automobile-related place of interest in Stuttgart besides the plants of Bosch and Mahle. The second largest automobile race in the world after the Indianapolis 500, Solitude, used to be held in Stuttgart just west of town near the Solitude Palace. As the course was/is on public roads, most of it still exists (and can be driven on) as well as some of the facilities. If you do a search on the Germany forum using the terms marcopolko and Solitude you should be able to find information on it and its location.

Besides automotive things, Stuttgart also has much more to offer ( www.stuttgart-tourist.de ).

Advise Needed: BMW Welt & Frankfurt Motor Show 2009

My wife and I are planning our 1st trip to Europe.

My wife wants to visit London %26amp; UK.

Being a car nut, I want to visit the BMW Museum, the BMW Welt %26amp; BMW Factory Tour in Munich.

I also want to visit the Frankfurt Motor Show 2009 which I understand is between September 15, 2009 to September 27, 2009 in Frankfurt.

I will arrive in London spend a week in the UK and then plan to go to Germany for 3-4 days before returning to London and flying back to Malaysia.

How best should I plan my trip?

Apart from BMW Factory Tour, what other factory tour are available for the public?

The IAA car show is fabulous and a lot of fun. It really needs a few days to see all of the halls. The biggest problem is finding a hotel room and the prices they charge for those hotel rooms. You might need to look in one of the surrounding towns for a room, like Mainz or Wiesbaden or Langen or Darmstadt. This is a HUGE fair. Your wife may want to spend her time at one of the many museums in Frankfurt or sightseeing, or she may enjoy the car show too, as it is so interesting. Shopping is always an option here too!

Should I fly in to Munich from London, stay for 2 nights and then take a ICE train to Frankfurt, stay anorther 2 night and then fly back to London?

My search reveals that one can actually spend the whole day at the BMW Welt, Musuem %26amp; Factory.

The guided tours are as follows:-

2 days Munich, train to Frankfurt, 2 days Frankfurt is for sure an option.

Main problem will be accommodation as you%26#39;ll find that

a) the prices going up considerably in both cities during these events

b) frequent visitors / exhibitors will have already secured their accommodation for 2009

Best options are most likely in places where you%26#39;ll have to commute 30-60 minutes into Munich/Frankfurt. Check your options e.g. with

If you have secured accommodation you can plan things like transport other sightseeing etc. There will be plenty of options.

Planning for Oktoberfest 2009 - ?'s

Knowing that hotels can book up I have been planning for Oktoberfest %26#39;09 for some time now. I am a fairly experienced traveler but have not been to Europe for about 20 yrs now.

We are still trying to decide on which week and how long we will stay...are there any advantages coming the first week or second week?

I%26#39;m still trying to decide on a hotel so any suggestions would be great. We are looking for something on the inexpensive side, knowing it is more expensive in general during that time, with a good location. I don%26#39;t need to be near the Oktoberfest grounds but would rather be in a good location to transportation (to grounds and other parts of the city), beer halls, restaurants, attractions, etc. I have considered a hotel like King%26#39;s hotel.

Booking online - I know sites like Orbitz and Expedia offer Europe hotels. I was on booking.com as well. Are there any sites that are more commonly used for booking hotels in Europe/Munich than what I was on?

Has anyone in the US used Ludus Tours for their trip? Recommend any other sites that offer Oktoberfest packages?

I am sure I will have more but that is a start! Thanks!

I don%26#39;t think there is a site optimal for all of Europe, but in Germany you usually get best results with reservation serices such as www.hotel.de and www.hrs.de

These include maybe half of all available accomodation (other booking servces are even less complete). The best, most complete list of accomodations is always available on the city%26#39;s or town%26#39;s own website (typically www.[name of town].de, then -%26gt; Tourism or Accomodation or something like this).

Sr: I would recommend going during the week.. Does not matter whether or not you arrive the first or second Monday, but the weekends are crazy crowded.

i would advise being there for opening day, as the parades are awesome! i would also try booking %26quot;pension westfalia%26quot;, a european- style pension. it is DIRECTLY across from the Oktoberfest grounds, you can simply walk across. also the parade runs right by there. most rooms there share a bath in the hall, but a few have a private bathroom. i would pay the extra and get one of those. he also serves a very good breakfast to start your day right.

there is awesome italian food right down the street at the hostel.

i also need to let you know that the pension i suggested isn%26#39;t fancy. the beds are a little larger than %26quot;bunks%26quot;, and have one pillow per bed, also a big down-type comforter. i worried that i wouldn%26#39;t stay warm enough, but that baby was so warm i had to open the window to sleep! if you are looking for %26quot;holiday inn%26quot; style, this isn%26#39;t it. on the other hand, it was quite affordable. i would be sure to book one of the few rooms he has with the %26quot;private bath,%26quot; however.

wherever you stay, have fun and enjoy the party!

i can sure appreciate that! sometimes i do tend to go out on the %26quot;edge%26quot; a little. i could possibly be the oldest person in a hostel-type place at any time. most people like a little more %26quot;luxury%26quot; than i tend to require. i am a true %26quot;low-maintenance woman!%26quot; LOL

I have friends that used Ludus Tours for Oktoberfest. Not being there on my own I%26#39;m not sure how their prices compare to anyone elses, but my friend said going through Ludus was the only way to get beer tent reservations. You can reserve them yourself if you have a group of 10 or more, but they only had 3. They liked the Ludus group. They also recommended doing the BMW factory tour.

Does anyone know how to get beer tent tickets for Oktoberfest 2009 - I can not figure that out!!

I am traveling to the Oktoberfest this year and will be flying into Stuttgart airport and going by train to munich. Can anyone give advice on rail tickets i.e purchase a return trip to Munich or purchase Bavaria ticket along with ticket to Bavaria border (not sure which station this would be, maybe Ulm??)There will be around 18 people traveling.

With 18 persons you can buy group tickets. Discounts of up to 70% are possible if you book in advance. But you cannot buy these tickets online.

If you stick to regional trains

1. Mo-Fr

a combination of Baden-Württemberg Ticket (EUR 28,00 for 2-5 persons) and Bavaria Ticket (EUR 28,00 for 2-5 persons)

2. Sa or Su

Happy-Weekend-Ticket. EUR 35,00 for up to 5 persons.

The cheapest way would be just buying four Baden-Württemberg-Tickets and four Bavaria Tickets, but you can use only slower local trains with several changes.

With 18 persons you are eligible for huge discounts on normal train tickets - I think as much as 60% from normal price. But you cannot buy the tickets online - you have to go to the counter in Stuttgart airport or call Deutsche Bahn.

Things to Do in Darmstadt

Hi, I will be in Darmstdt for a week in March. I will be working but my husband and daughter will be traveling with me and will need things to do during the day. Any advice on things to see and/or do in Darmstadt and surrounding areas? Mainz or Frankfurt? We are not veteran train riders, so any advice on how to get around will be appreciated. I think we will stay at the Maritim? thanks very much!

The Maritim is next to the train station, so you have all flexibility.

Darmstadt itself has been heavily destroyed in World War II but some interesting buildings have survived or been rebuilt.

The No. 1 sight is Mathildenhöhe with its art nouveau (Jugendstil) architecture and the Russian chapel. Check if there are any exhibitions on.

Then there is the palace (now university), the Landesmuseum (cultural history and art), a couple of churches, the Hundertwasser house.

Day trip options, in addition to Frankfurt and Mainz which are both worthwhile for a day:

- Heidelberg (no need to explain, I hope)

- Worms with its Romanesque cathedral

- a hidden gem no one knows: the old town of Weinheim and the castle ruin above

- Bergstraße with its vineyards and mild climate, in March the cherry and plum trees there will already be in bloom. Lovely for a walk/hike on a sunny spring day, starting for example from Bensheim or Zwingenberg

- Schwetzingen palace, baroque park and landscape garden South of Mannheim

- Aschaffenburg

All these are within less than one hour travel time and can be done by train.

You can get RMV tickets also to some places just outside the RMV (blue background on the above map). E.g. Worms, Weinheim, Aschaffenburg

Nice towns are e.g. Weinheim, Michelstadt, Erbach, Aschaffenburg. All can be reached by direct trains from Darmstadt.

There are a few famous places just outside Darmstadt, albeit in first place for enthusiasts.
