Bike Hire in the English Garden

Hi

Quick question - I%26#39;ve had a look round on the internet and can%26#39;t find an answer...

I am visiting Munich in a few weeks, and thought it would be a nice idea to hire a bike for a couple of hours to explore the English Garden - does anyone know of anywhere where I can do this (near to the Garden so I don%26#39;t have to cycle through town (I prefer to walk and soak up the scenerey) and how much I would expect to pay for 1 or 2 hours?

Thanks

Dave

Detox spas, in Germany.

I%26#39;m about to undergo several treatments of a special type of Chemo therapy due to my mestatic colon cancer to my lungs.

What I am looking for is a Holistic noninvasive cancer treatment that I can use in combined with my regular treatment of chemo.

I live in Ramstein, Germany now, so really anywhere in the surrounding area. Munchen, Heidelberg or Kaiserslaughtern

I just want to be as healthy as I can be during the chemo.

|||

You might look at the website for Baden-Wuerttemberg tourism www.tourismus-bw.de . Baden-Wuerttemberg has more spas than any other German state, and many of them are health related. If you can%26#39;t find suitable information on their website, go to the brochure section on the German part of their website and have them send you for free Baden-Württemberg 2009 erleben which in the back has a list of spas in BW, many of them health related. If you plan to visit Baen-Wuerttemberg ever, it%26#39;a also the best source of things to see and do.

|||

I don%26#39;t know if you speak German or not, but if you do, I think I would post this question over on the German board. You might start looking online under Heilpraktiker organizations.

Have you spoken to your Dr. about some recommendations? If you have a Heilpraktiker Dr. they should be able to give you some help in finding a place. Contact your insurance company too, as they will be able to find you places that they will cover perhaps.

Parking outside the green zone

We%26#39;re driving to Berlin tomorrow from Poland, and just came across the information about the need for a green sticker to driver/park in the centre. Since these have to be pre-ordered, it%26#39;s too late for us to do this, so it looks like we%26#39;ll need to park outside the centre and use public transport.

Since the car is a late-model BMW, my friend is concerned about security. Can anyone recommend a safe place to park on the east side of Berlin, outside the central zone? It would preferably be adjacent to a U/S-bahn or DB station.

Any suggestions would be most appreciated!

JD

|||

The Umweltzone covers the area within the Ringbahn. You could park at Südkreuz station which has DB and S-Bahn connections, and two very large indoor parking garages.

|||

Try the parking lots near the Landsberger Allee S Bahn station. It is just outside the %26quot;Ring%26quot; and has good public transportation possibilities

|||

I%26#39;ve been looking at the BVG route map, and it indicates that some stations have Park %26amp; Ride lots (for example, Friedrichshagen or Wuhletal). Does anyone know if you can leave cars overnight in such lots (e.g. from Friday night until Sunday afternoon?)

Thanks for the suggestions so far!

Hi,

My wife and I are driving to Berlin this weekend and also need an umweltplakette.

Is it posible to by one before we go or can we buy one in Germany/Berlin?

We live in Denmark and are driving over Hamburg to Berlin.

Thanks in advance

Jean

|||

Ok... a little googeling gave the answer.

The umweltplakette can be bought at vehicle inspection stations in Denmark.

Perhaps the same can be done in Poland?

Is it better to go with a tour group to Oberammergau?

I would like to take my grandkids to Oberammergau in 2010. My granddaughter also wants to see France. Would it be best to do our own thing or go with a group? I thought about seeing Switzerland, also. My Dad%26#39;s people were from there.

|||

With a youngster, I would not go in a tour group. Too inflexible and usually too %26quot;verbose%26quot;, i.e. the guides cover more things in more detail than a child would appreciate.

Look into lying into an %26quot;open jaw%26quot; flight arrangement, flying into Zuerich and returning from Munich. Then you can go either by train, at least partially, or by car.

Depending how much time you have and from which area your father%26#39;s people are from, take the train from Zueric there, or take the train to Interlaken (Ost) and on to Grindelwald or Lauterbrunnen to visit that part of the Swiss Alps. Then take the train to Lindau (Germany) and pick up your car there and %26quot;do%26quot; the parts of Bavaria near Oberammergau - - - Fuessen/Neuschwanstein Castle, Linderhof palace (on the way to Oberammergau), Garmisch Partenkirchen. I assume you don%26#39;t plan to see the Passion Play in Oberammergau (not sure it is on in 2010). It would be quite hard on a child.

|||

From what I have seen, the prices for the tours that include Obereammergau are punitive so I would go on my own.

train from airport

Hello,

It%26#39;s my first time in Berlin and i will be at Schoenefeld airport about eleven o%26#39;clock at night. I am wonderring if there is a train from the airport to the center of the city or it%26#39;s too late? If there isn%26#39;t how much it will cost a taxi?

|||

BVG timetable

fahrinfo-berlin.de/Fahrinfo/bin/query.bin/en…

From: SXF

It%26#39;s not too late for trains. The airport is anyway connected 24 hours by public transport.

Single ticket is EUR 2,80.

You can use any combination of local public transport to reach your destination in Berlin

- regional trains (RB, RE)

- S-Bahn

- U-Bahn (metro)

- trams

- buses

and even some ferries.

Taxi is EUR 25-35 depending where in central Berlin.

|||

Thanks so much for your reply

|||

Hello - does the 2.50euro ticket do you throughout your journey? Is this the most cost effective ticket for two or is there perhaps a group ticket or something? Thanks, Tam

|||

%26quot;does the 2.50euro ticket do you throughout your journey?%26quot;

Yes, but from Schoenefeld you need a ticket for the ABC zones, for 2,80 euros.

Things to see on drive from Munich to Frankfurt

Hi, my daughter and I will be driving from Frankfurt to Munich and then back to Frankfurt the last weekend in February. We only have Saturday and Sunday to visit Munich and surrounding. My thoughts are to take a tour to Salzburg on Saturday and then drive to Fussen (for the castles) before starting back to Frankfurt. Can you advise please things to do and see on the drive from Fussen to Frankfurt? From what I%26#39;ve read we would want to drive the Romantic Road, so if you could point out some sights along that stretch not to miss I would greatly appreciate it.

|||

For a few days Munich, Salzburg and Fuessen are a fairly long way away, and you wouldn%26#39;t have much time to enjoy yourselves, you%26#39;ll be doing a lot of driving. You might limit yourself to the Rhine gorge NW of Frankfurt, or some of the Romantic Road.

The highlights of the Romantic Road are the Residence in Wuerzburg, the walled medieval town of Rothenburg ob der Tauber, and Neuschwanstein Palace by Fuessen. The Romantic Road isn%26#39;t romantic at all, just some places along it, so there is no real need to drive it to see the highlighhts, just use the A7 autobahn which kind of parallels it as it is much faster than a two-lane road. A short distance off of the A7 are also Ulm with its record height church spire, Ottobeuren with a beautiful church that contains more beautiful Baroque religious items than can be easily comprehended, and the Steiff Museum in Giengen who invented the teddy bear.

Although I would never recommend visiting many places on the Romantic Road in summer because of all of the foreign tourist hordes, in February there will be few of them and Neuschwanstein in the snow is lovely.

Booking Train Seats in Advance, December

Hi, my partner and I will be in Europe for our honeymoon in December this year.

I was wondering if it is adviseable that time of year to pre-book seats on all of our trains or will we be able to go to the station and jump on board.

We will be travelling on a Eurail Global Pass. In Germany, we will be doing the following trips - Innbruck to Munich, Munich to Nuremberg, and Nuremberg to Amsterdam.

Do you still pay a reservation fee if booking at the train station on the day?

Thanks in advance!

|||

Depends when in December. I%26#39;d for sure book seats for the one long leg, the Nuremberg-Amsterdam trip. Assuming that you are travelling first class with a Eurail pass, you won%26#39;t need reservations for the two shorter trips (unless it is a peak travel day like, for example, Dec 23...)

Of course you pay a reservation fee if you book at the station, and if you are unlucky there might even be no more seats available. Book these in advance.

We have had some Aussie posters here who had been told by their travel agents that a seat reservation costs more than 40 €. This is plain wrong and a ripoff. A seat reservation on DB trains is 4 € per seat when booked online on http://www.bahn.de, the website of German railways (English version available), the same price as at the station. Look up your connection and proceed as if you wanted to book tickets. At a certain point the system will ask you if you want a ticket with reservation, a ticket without reservation, or a seat reservation only - tick the third option.

Bookings can in theory be done 89 days in advance. Since the timetable changes in early December, however, you will have to wait till the new timetable is online, which usually happens in mid to late October.

|||

Innsbruck to Munich

There are 2 routes. The main one via Kufstein and a more scenic one via Mittenwald.

eisenbahnen.at/bilderalben/karwendelbahn.sht…

On the Mittenwald route there are only regional trains where seat reservations are not possible at all. However as these trains start in Innsbruck it won%26#39;t be a problem to find free seats if you%26#39;re there in time.

Munich to Nuremberg

Needs just 1 hour by ICE. I would not reserve for this leg.

Nuremberg to Amsterdam

You can reserve seats for this trip e.g. already in Innsbruck or Munich.

Seat reservations online are only possible for domestic trips inside Germany. Thus in this case from Nuremberg to Oberhausen. The chance that your seat will be given to someone else for the rest of the trip is however small.

|||

December isn%26#39;t a very busy month in Europe. I would skip the seat reservations and sit where the spirit moves.

|||

%26gt;December isn%26#39;t a very busy month in Europe.

Unless it%26#39;s around the Christmas holidays and New Year%26#39;s which is peak of peak travel time...

Apartment in Munich

I will be in Munich for 5 nights in June 2009. Traveling with wife, son, and his girlfriend. Rather than getting two hotel rooms, I am looking for more affordable option of renting an apartment for our visit. Would like to have someting centrally located. Any ideas?

Thanks!

|||

Hi,

June is a beautiful time. You think of looking for the suburbs where you can get %26quot;Ferienwohnung%26quot;. These are small appartments with kitchen. Downtown Munich will not really offer this. If you look into the suburbs you can get to City Center by S-Banh within 25 Minutes and you have the country side with connection to the lakes and mountains.

Just an idea!

Sunny

|||

Not having any real knowledge of the city, which areas would you suggest I look at? Do you know of any apartments in the area?

|||

Look at Hubmann on the south side of the river near tram and metro stops I believe. There are some positive reviews on this site and we are thinking of staying there later in year. ALternatively try the Holiday-Rentals site

HighTest Beer in Munich?

My DH likes his beer with a bit more alcohol. What type of beer should he order? What brand would you recommend?

|||

Order the local beer served in the particular establishment you are visiting. (Most of the breweries in and around Munich have their own biergartens and/or restaurants).

Drinking in Munich isn%26#39;t for getting drunk -- it%26#39;s for appreciating the centuries-old craft of producing excellent beers.

|||

Some of the Winter / Seasonal brews are higher (6.5 to 8.1 % ABV) that average beers. Most beer in Munich are indeed to be enjoyed, not intended for drunken contests.. Most are between 5.2 and 6.3%...

Also, a few of the Dopplebocks may be around 7%//

|||

Thanks for the feedback.

|||

Here the restaurants/pubs tend to be tied to a brewery in many cases so brand isn%26#39;t the issue.

To go for high strength, often the dearest beers are the more potent. Also any that end %26quot;ator%26quot; tend to be interestingly strong.

In Augustiner places for example, Edelstoff is about 5.30 Euro per litre (yes, litre- which is why perhaps strong is not optimum for enjoyment) whereas the lower strength Helles is about 5.

Aventinus, not from Augustiner, is 8 per cent, so per litre could have interesting effect.

You can get light coloured beer, dark coloured beer, and also wheat beer (light or dark or intermediate) of varying strengths. Augustiner is often indicated as being a good brewery, but it%26#39;s all down to taste.

|||

Ethelemen, thanks for being non judgmental, I appreciate just the facts. will remember your advice!

|||

Also look for Starkbiers which are sold at many biergartens usually 6 to 8 % or maybe stronger. Some of the stronger beers are bottled so you may to ask and look out for some of the smaller breweries eg Andechs have a bar in the Frauen kirche area that has some excellent beers

2 days in Munich

Hi all,

I%26#39;m planning a trip to Europe. I%26#39;ll be arriving in Munich in the late afternoon. But I%26#39;ll be spending two full days in Munich. I have 2 questions regarding this.

1. Will Munich be enough to keep me busy for 2 days or can I squeeze in a side trip to a neighboring city...maybe the Black Forest?

2. Is the area around the Munich HFB main train station generally safe? I plan on staying at a hostel close to there. I will be taking an early morning train from Munich to Paris.

Thanks for your advice.

|||

Munich has enough to keep you busy for 2 days .

If you want a side trip , Black Forset is too far , but Neuschwanstein and Garmisch is possible

Munich is a generally safe town

|||

If you want to visit the Black Forest ( www.schwarzwald-tourismus.info ), do it on the way to Paris. It won%26#39;t be too far out of your way.

Advise Needed: BMW Welt & Frankfurt Motor Show 2009

My wife and I are planning our 1st trip to Europe.

My wife wants to visit London %26amp; UK.

Being a car nut, I want to visit the BMW Museum, the BMW Welt %26amp; BMW Factory Tour in Munich.

I also want to visit the Frankfurt Motor Show 2009 which I understand is between September 15, 2009 to September 27, 2009 in Frankfurt.

I will arrive in London spend a week in the UK and then plan to go to Germany for 3-4 days before returning to London and flying back to Malaysia.

How best should I plan my trip?

Apart from BMW Factory Tour, what other factory tour are available for the public?

Thanks

|||

The IAA car show is fabulous and a lot of fun. It really needs a few days to see all of the halls. The biggest problem is finding a hotel room and the prices they charge for those hotel rooms. You might need to look in one of the surrounding towns for a room, like Mainz or Wiesbaden or Langen or Darmstadt. This is a HUGE fair. Your wife may want to spend her time at one of the many museums in Frankfurt or sightseeing, or she may enjoy the car show too, as it is so interesting. Shopping is always an option here too!

|||

Should I fly in to Munich from London, stay for 2 nights and then take a ICE train to Frankfurt, stay anorther 2 night and then fly back to London?

Any sugggestions? Thks

|||

Whatever is cheapest! Have you looked at Stuttgart? Porsche?

|||

My search reveals that one can actually spend the whole day at the BMW Welt, Musuem %26amp; Factory.

The guided tours are as follows:-

) BMW Welt 80mins

ii)BMW Museum 1 1/2 hours

iii) BMW Factory Tour 2 1/2 hours.

|||

The 2 most unhealthy events for hotel prices Germany has on offer in one short trip ;-)

IAA Munich

17. - 27. September 2009

The first 2 days are however for professionals/traders only.

http://www.iaa.de/index.php?id=11%26amp;L=1

Oktoberfest Munich

19. Sep. - 4. Oct. 2009

http://www.oktoberfest.de/en/index.php

2 days Munich, train to Frankfurt, 2 days Frankfurt is for sure an option.

Main problem will be accommodation as you%26#39;ll find that

a) the prices going up considerably in both cities during these events

b) frequent visitors / exhibitors will have already secured their accommodation for 2009

Best options are most likely in places where you%26#39;ll have to commute 30-60 minutes into Munich/Frankfurt. Check your options e.g. with

http://www.hrs.com

If you have secured accommodation you can plan things like transport other sightseeing etc. There will be plenty of options.

|||

Change of plans.

Now planning to travel in May 2009.

So Frankfurt is out.

Fly London to Munich for 3-4 nights.

Day 1

Sightseeing around Munich

Day 2

I will be at BMW Welt/Factory/Musuem for the whole day.

Wife will be going to nearby Olympia Einkaufszentrum for shopping.

Day 3

Trip to either Stuggart( Mercedes/Porsche) vs Ingolstadt (Audi)

Which would be better?

Day 4(?)

Day trip Bavaria: Royal Castles Neuschwanstein and Linderhof

Suggestions welcomed.

Thks

Stuttgart has the excellent Mercedes Benz Museum ( www.mercedes-benz.com/classic )with 160 vehicles documenting the over 120 year history of the automobile and this firm. It%26#39;s easy to spend a half day there, and if you%26#39;re real interested, you probably could spend several days. Exhibits include Mercedes through the years, automotive improvements, and race and record setting cars. The building is nice architecturally and their is a time line as you spiral down between floors with world events since the invention of the auto (quite interesting in itself)- note Stuttgart is where it was invented. With pre-arrangement, you can also tour their motor factory nearby. (A few times a month they have special tours of the museum on varied topics.)Mercedes%26#39; largest assembly plant in nearby Sindelfingen can also be toured. It is best to make pre-arrangements through their European delivery program at their US website.

The above website also has information on Daimler%26#39;s reconstructed workshop in the Bad Cannstatt part of Stuttgart, and also Daimler%26#39;s home where he was born in nearby Schorndorf which now houses a museum that contains the world%26#39;s first motorcycle as well as other items dealing with his life.

The new Porsche Museum ( www.porsche.com ) is set to open this 31Jan and I believe will have 60-80 cars on display. Like the Mercedes Benz Museum, it is architecturally interesting besides the cars it contains.

One other automobile-related place of interest in Stuttgart besides the plants of Bosch and Mahle. The second largest automobile race in the world after the Indianapolis 500, Solitude, used to be held in Stuttgart just west of town near the Solitude Palace. As the course was/is on public roads, most of it still exists (and can be driven on) as well as some of the facilities. If you do a search on the Germany forum using the terms marcopolko and Solitude you should be able to find information on it and its location.

Besides automotive things, Stuttgart also has much more to offer ( www.stuttgart-tourist.de ).

Thanks

|||

Shopping is always an option here too!

|||

Should I fly in to Munich from London, stay for 2 nights and then take a ICE train to Frankfurt, stay anorther 2 night and then fly back to London?

Any sugggestions? Thks

|||

Whatever is cheapest! Have you looked at Stuttgart? Porsche?

|||

My search reveals that one can actually spend the whole day at the BMW Welt, Musuem %26amp; Factory.

The guided tours are as follows:-

) BMW Welt 80mins

ii)BMW Museum 1 1/2 hours

iii) BMW Factory Tour 2 1/2 hours.

|||

There will be plenty of options.

|||

Thks

|||

Planning for Oktoberfest 2009 - ?'s

Knowing that hotels can book up I have been planning for Oktoberfest %26#39;09 for some time now. I am a fairly experienced traveler but have not been to Europe for about 20 yrs now.

We are still trying to decide on which week and how long we will stay...are there any advantages coming the first week or second week?

I%26#39;m still trying to decide on a hotel so any suggestions would be great. We are looking for something on the inexpensive side, knowing it is more expensive in general during that time, with a good location. I don%26#39;t need to be near the Oktoberfest grounds but would rather be in a good location to transportation (to grounds and other parts of the city), beer halls, restaurants, attractions, etc. I have considered a hotel like King%26#39;s hotel.

Booking online - I know sites like Orbitz and Expedia offer Europe hotels. I was on booking.com as well. Are there any sites that are more commonly used for booking hotels in Europe/Munich than what I was on?

Has anyone in the US used Ludus Tours for their trip? Recommend any other sites that offer Oktoberfest packages?

I am sure I will have more but that is a start! Thanks!

|||

%26gt;Are there any sites that are more commonly used for booking hotels in Europe/Munich than what I was on?

I don%26#39;t think there is a site optimal for all of Europe, but in Germany you usually get best results with reservation serices such as www.hotel.de and www.hrs.de

These include maybe half of all available accomodation (other booking servces are even less complete). The best, most complete list of accomodations is always available on the city%26#39;s or town%26#39;s own website (typically www.[name of town].de, then -%26gt; Tourism or Accomodation or something like this).

|||

Sr: I would recommend going during the week.. Does not matter whether or not you arrive the first or second Monday, but the weekends are crazy crowded.

|||

srauhala,

i would advise being there for opening day, as the parades are awesome! i would also try booking %26quot;pension westfalia%26quot;, a european- style pension. it is DIRECTLY across from the Oktoberfest grounds, you can simply walk across. also the parade runs right by there. most rooms there share a bath in the hall, but a few have a private bathroom. i would pay the extra and get one of those. he also serves a very good breakfast to start your day right.

there is awesome italian food right down the street at the hostel.

regards,

mambomamma

|||

Thanks for the info so far!

|||

i also need to let you know that the pension i suggested isn%26#39;t fancy. the beds are a little larger than %26quot;bunks%26quot;, and have one pillow per bed, also a big down-type comforter. i worried that i wouldn%26#39;t stay warm enough, but that baby was so warm i had to open the window to sleep! if you are looking for %26quot;holiday inn%26quot; style, this isn%26#39;t it. on the other hand, it was quite affordable. i would be sure to book one of the few rooms he has with the %26quot;private bath,%26quot; however.

wherever you stay, have fun and enjoy the party!

mambomamma

|||

mambomamma - thanks for the suggestion but I think we will stick the the more %26quot;traditional%26quot; type of hotel. I probably could do it but the wife and friends we are traveling with probably wouldn%26#39;t be into it.

|||

srauhala,

i can sure appreciate that! sometimes i do tend to go out on the %26quot;edge%26quot; a little. i could possibly be the oldest person in a hostel-type place at any time. most people like a little more %26quot;luxury%26quot; than i tend to require. i am a true %26quot;low-maintenance woman!%26quot; LOL

i do hope you go and have a great time! munich is a blast.

mambomamma

|||

I have friends that used Ludus Tours for Oktoberfest. Not being there on my own I%26#39;m not sure how their prices compare to anyone elses, but my friend said going through Ludus was the only way to get beer tent reservations. You can reserve them yourself if you have a group of 10 or more, but they only had 3. They liked the Ludus group. They also recommended doing the BMW factory tour.

|||

Thanks for the info PlantedAnts. Their prices seem okay, probably close to what you would pay if you paid for each thing separately. Definitley leaning towards them.

|||

Does anyone know how to get beer tent tickets for Oktoberfest 2009 - I can not figure that out!!

Bavaria ticket

I am traveling to the Oktoberfest this year and will be flying into Stuttgart airport and going by train to munich. Can anyone give advice on rail tickets i.e purchase a return trip to Munich or purchase Bavaria ticket along with ticket to Bavaria border (not sure which station this would be, maybe Ulm??)There will be around 18 people traveling.

Any info greatly appreciated.

Danke, Paul

|||

With 18 persons you can buy group tickets. Discounts of up to 70% are possible if you book in advance. But you cannot buy these tickets online.

bahn.co.uk/db_uk/view/products/groups.shtml

If you stick to regional trains

1. Mo-Fr

a combination of Baden-Württemberg Ticket (EUR 28,00 for 2-5 persons) and Bavaria Ticket (EUR 28,00 for 2-5 persons)

2. Sa or Su

Happy-Weekend-Ticket. EUR 35,00 for up to 5 persons.

|||

The cheapest way would be just buying four Baden-Württemberg-Tickets and four Bavaria Tickets, but you can use only slower local trains with several changes.

With 18 persons you are eligible for huge discounts on normal train tickets - I think as much as 60% from normal price. But you cannot buy the tickets online - you have to go to the counter in Stuttgart airport or call Deutsche Bahn.

|||

thanks for your reply I will contact them for group bookings

Wiedersehen, paul

|||

thanks for your time and info, I will certainly contact deutsche bahn before travel.

wiedersehen, paul

Things to Do in Darmstadt

Hi, I will be in Darmstdt for a week in March. I will be working but my husband and daughter will be traveling with me and will need things to do during the day. Any advice on things to see and/or do in Darmstadt and surrounding areas? Mainz or Frankfurt? We are not veteran train riders, so any advice on how to get around will be appreciated. I think we will stay at the Maritim? thanks very much!

|||

The Maritim is next to the train station, so you have all flexibility.

Darmstadt itself has been heavily destroyed in World War II but some interesting buildings have survived or been rebuilt.

The No. 1 sight is Mathildenhöhe with its art nouveau (Jugendstil) architecture and the Russian chapel. Check if there are any exhibitions on.

Then there is the palace (now university), the Landesmuseum (cultural history and art), a couple of churches, the Hundertwasser house.

Day trip options, in addition to Frankfurt and Mainz which are both worthwhile for a day:

- Heidelberg (no need to explain, I hope)

- Worms with its Romanesque cathedral

- a hidden gem no one knows: the old town of Weinheim and the castle ruin above

- Bergstraße with its vineyards and mild climate, in March the cherry and plum trees there will already be in bloom. Lovely for a walk/hike on a sunny spring day, starting for example from Bensheim or Zwingenberg

- Schwetzingen palace, baroque park and landscape garden South of Mannheim

- Aschaffenburg

All these are within less than one hour travel time and can be done by train.

|||

Bergstrasse

Weinheim

www.weinheim-marketing.de/index.php…

Darmstadt is inside the RMV local public transport network. RMV tickets cover all local public transport (regional trains, S-Bahn, trams, buses).

rmv.de/coremedia/…data.pdf

You can get RMV tickets also to some places just outside the RMV (blue background on the above map). E.g. Worms, Weinheim, Aschaffenburg

Nice towns are e.g. Weinheim, Michelstadt, Erbach, Aschaffenburg. All can be reached by direct trains from Darmstadt.

There are a few famous places just outside Darmstadt, albeit in first place for enthusiasts.

Grube Messel (UNESCO world heritage)

http://www.grube-messel.de/

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Messel_pit

Because of its plethora of fossils, it has significant geological and scientific importance.

Small problem: visitor centre is closed till end of March

Burg Frankenstein

http://www.burg-frankenstein.de

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Castle_Frankenstein

Nice views from there. Also a restaurant up there. Otherwise a castle like thousands others in Germany. If it would not be for the name.

Lorsch Abbey and the famous Königshalle (King’s Hall) (UNESCO world heritage)

Munich Airport

This trip we will not be going into Munich but rather spending the afternoon and evening at or near the airport. Can you suggest anything close by to see--and recommend places for dinner (German!). Thank you!

|||

Freising.

20 minutes by bus from the airport.

Nice Bavarian town. Has the oldest brewery on the planet (Weihenstephan).

freising.de/pdf/tourismus/cityguide_08_en.pdf

|||

Hmmm... Weihenstephan.. Yummy!

|||

For dinner in Freising, we liked the restaurants at the Hotel zur Gred and the Hotel Bayerischerhof. The

Hotel zur Gred is on Bahnhofstrasse on the way into town from the train station (10 minute walk). The shuttle bus that you can catch to Freising goes to the train station.

The Hotel Bayersicherhof is at Untere Hauptstrasse 3 right in town. It is another 5 minutes walk beyond the zur Gred.

Regards, Gary

|||

Hi,

In addition to Freising, we liked Erding. Very nice old town about 20 minutes from the airport.

Frankfurt airport to Frankfurts Historical Museum

Hi

We arrive at Frankfurt airport this Sunday at 9:40 and then depart for Barcelona at 12:45. We%26#39;d like to try to see the Musuem which is only 19 minutes away according to Google Map. Is this duable or unrealistic. I hate to waste 3 hours in the airport when I may never see Germany again. Also...what would a taxi cost for this distance? I just reran Google Map and now it says that it is 21 km and 26 minutes.

Thanks for any help you can give.

Kathy

|||

A taxi will run about 30-35 €. Less traffic on Sunday, so this might not be overly accurate. I do not think you will really have time, since if you land at 09:40, you might not be through the gate til earliest, 10:15. You will need to go through security again for a flight at 1245? You need to be going back through security around 11:15 at the very latest. It is doable, but sounds kind of stressy for me. I dont know how many of you there are, but if you want to try the S-bahn, buy a %26quot;gruppenkarte%26quot; which runs around 13 €, it will get up to 5 of you to Frankfurt and back, and would include riding the tram from the Hauptbahnhof if you wanted to take that to the Römer. It is Tram #11. Otherwise, stay on the S-bahn and get off at the Hauptwache.

If you are going to go the taxi route, I think I would leave the Historical Museum, and just spend time in the area directly in front of it. The Römer, Alt Nikolai church, the Kaiserdom, the Roman bath ruins, go up on the bridge - Eisener Steg for a quick look around. You might be able to squeeze this all in about an hour and then race back to the airport. There is a taxi stand right there on the street.

Who knows, maybe you will get lucky and arrive early. I got in an hour early the last time I arrived from the states. Flights often do, due to the tailwinds.

|||

Hey Bornheimgirl

WOW....I can%26#39;t thank you enough for this great information. I think your suggestions of staying close to the airport is best. I didn%26#39;t even think of all the time to get off the plane...go through security, etc. Plus, I could probably spend a whole day in the museum rather than an hour or so. Plus, I%26#39;d probably be a mental mess worring about missing the plane.

I%26#39;m going to print out your suggestions and check them all out to see which would be the best. We (2 of us) want to experience at least a little of Germany. My Dad was in a POW camp during WWII However, when my Dad came back from the war, I was concieved......so there is a sentimental bond to your country.

Thanks again Bornheimgirl and if you have any more suggestions, I welcome them!!!

Kathy

|||

Hope you will plan to spend some time here your next vacation to Europe. We have some really marvelous museums. I do like the Historical Museum, but also the Archaeology Museum, and the Judengasse Museum, and for the really unusual, the Leather Museum. If you come to Frankfurt the last weekend in Aug. they have this HUGE Museum Riverbank Festival. You buy a button for 4€ and you can get in all the museums in Frankfurt during all 3 days of the Fest. Everyone has a blast. We have had over 3 million people show up the past couple of years, so this is one of the premier events in Germany.

I used to work at a small Army post called Camp King and this used to be a German POW camp, and then later the Americans used it as a POW camp for the Germans. It had quite a history and they have a website for it too. Do you know where your dad was?

|||

Hi againBornheimgirl

Are you German? You %26#39;talk%26#39; like you could be the girl next door here in Seattle, Washington. Actually I%26#39;m in Bellevue which people know now because Microsoft is about a half mile down the street and Bill Gates lives here....although officially Microsoft is in Redmond Washington because of a weird borderline between cities.

Anyway, I don%26#39;t know where my Dad was but it was near the stalg that the Great Escape took place. They made a film about that and it was a very popular film. I could find out but I%26#39;m frantically trying to get ready for our trip. His plane crashed in Hungary and he was brought to Germany. There is a great book about his experience. It was written by a fellow Seattle-ite and I guess it was pretty accurate even though he combined several people into one character in the book. It%26#39;s called MAYBE I%26#39;M DEAD by Joe Klaas.

Have you always lived in Frankfurt?? Do you speak as well as you write? My niece was an exchange student in Germany and lived there even after. She loves Germany.

Gotta go....lots to get done.

Kathy

|||

Nah, I am just an old Buckeye that has lived in Frankfurt for a really long time.

|||

That was at

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stalag_Luft_III

It was near Sagan, now Żagań in Poland, 100 miles (160 km) southeast of Berlin.

|||

Wow Bornheimgirl it is a small world. We had friends that lived in the housing area at Camp King in Oberursel when we were stationed in Germany from 1986-91. The entire Camp was like a large park. My friend and I both worked at AFN when it was on the Bertramstrasse. Bornheim is one of our favorite parts of Frankfurt. We used to love to eat and drink on the Bergerstrasse during the summer. Cheers and thanks for all the good information.

Europe trip June - August

Me and my boyfriend have got 3 months from the beginning of June - the end of Aug 2009 to travel around Europe. I would like to see Spain, Italy, Greece and Germany. Any tips on internal travel and where%26#39;s best to start from London?

|||

If you start from London, begin with Germany .

Then France-%26gt; Spain-%26gt; France -%26gt; Italy-%26gt; Greece.

Be aware it is quiet hot in August in Greece and in the south of Italy

|||

This is a virtual trip for your school work isn%26#39;t it ?

You would start in the country where temp is highest in June and end where it is coolest in August.

We will be in Munich for 2 1/2 days and want something close to all the main sights in Munich

THANKS!

For such a short term, I am not convinced that you would not be better off ($$ wise) with one tripple and one double room at the Hotel Am Viktualienmarkt or Deutches Theater. However, they do have ads for apartment rentals on:

Then click-on: Frederics Apartments

Which way from Munich to Paris?

Hi, we are a family of 4 (kids 15 %26amp; 11), flying to Berlin May 12th for 2 days then train to Prague for 2 days. From here I was thinking we would go to Munich for 3 days and we would like to visit Ludwig%26#39;s castles and Salzburg. Is it possible to do a day trip from Munich to Salzburg? From here which way do we go to Paris? We will have about 5 days. I was looking at either Romantic road or go to Frankfurt then Mainz for a cruise on the Rhine, or travel through the Swiss Alps?????

Or maybe something totally different....does anyone have a suggestion??

Thanks, Rel

|||

Well, Stuttgart ( www.stuttgart-tourist.de ) is on your way from Munich to Paris and has many excellent things to see and do. The whole family should enjoy the excellent Mercedes Benz Museum ( www.mercedes-benz.com/classic )which documents the over 120 year history of the automobile and this firm. The new Porsche Museum ( www.porsche.com ) opens at the end of this month. Stuttgart is after all where the automobile was invented. Wilhelma ( www.wilhelma.de ) is Europe%26#39;s largest combined zoo-botanical garden set amidst the nice Moorish architecture of this former palace. One of the three large mineral baths, Leuze, has a Kinderland and you can swim in bubbly carbonated water. Stuttgart is the home of the world%26#39;s first modern TV tower, completed in 1956, there is an observation deck ( www.fernsehturm-stuttgart.de ). Hoehenparkkillesberg (park) is an enjoyable place to spend a leisurely afternoon with its extensive gardens, a long minature train ride with a real steam engine, an interesting double-helix tower which can be climbed for excellent views over Stuttgart, flamingos and some animals such as llamas and ponies that would appeal to young children, and a few small childrens rides including a nice over 100 year old merry-go-round.

Nearby is the well preserved medieval center of Esslingen ( www.esslingen.de ), and Germany%26#39;s largest perfectly preserved Baroque palace, the Swabian Versailles (in www.schloesser-und-gaerten.de which also has the Stuttgart palaces and other excellent palaces, castles, medieval monasteries and gardens operated by the state of Baden-Wuerttemberg) in Ludwigsburg ( www.ludwigsburg.de ), with several days of good things to do like the tour of the royal chambers (best and longest palace tour I%26#39;ve been on in Europe) and the extensive gardens including a fairytale one for children and a deer park.

A short train ride away is our favorite town in Germany, Tuebingen ( www.tuebingen.de ) with its hilly cobblestone streets, castle, interesting shops, and one of Europe%26#39;s oldest universities. Like Oxford and Cambridge, they do punting on the Neckar River there, and you can take a ride in one or rent a row boat. Just to the north of it is well preserved medieval Bebenhausen Monastery (in www.schloesser-und-gaerten.de ). On the way to Tuebingen by train is Metzingen ( www.metzingen.de ) which has Germany%26#39;s most factory outlets for some inexpensive shopping.

If you drive, the Black Forest ( www.schwarzwald-tourismus.info ) and Swabian Alb (low limestone mountains with lots of castles, caves and excellent cliffside scenery- www.schwaebischealb.de ) are nearby. On the Alb there are lots of interesting places to visit: two fairytale-like castles- Burg Hohenzollern ( www.burg-hohenzollern.com ) and Schloss Lichtenstein ( www.schloss-lichtenstein.de only in German); an excellent castle (fortress) ruins, Hohenneuffen (in www.schloesser-und-gaerten.de ); Marbach stables ( www.gestuet-marbach.de ) by Gomadingen (do not make the mistake that the Queen of England made when dedicating the Schiller Archives in Marbach am Neckar when she asked %26quot;But where are the horses?%26quot;), Germany%26#39;s oldest state stables where you can visit the stallions in their stalls and the mares and colts will be out in the fields; the idyllic Grosse Lauter valley with one of Germany%26#39;s highest concentrations of castle ruins, many of which are visitable (you can also do canoe trips down this placid river- www.kanutouren.com , probably only in German); the beautiful Baroque former monastery church at Zwiefalten; the nice Baroque monastery at Obermarchtal; the lovely mountain valley town of Bad Urach; etc.

Maybe the family would enjoy a visit to the Ritter SPORT candy factory in Waldenbuch. Their art museum is interesting with art (some of which moves) in the form of squares (the shape of their SPORT candy bars); a small museum on chocolate manufacture; and a large sales room for their discounted candy bars. It%26#39;s also possible to tour a Mercedes Benz motor factory as part of their museum visit, and also their largest assembly plant at Sindelfingen does factory tours by pre-arrangement through their European delivery program at their US website.

There are also many amusement parks in Baden-Wuerttemberg and near Stuttgart: Erlebnispark Tripsdrill ( www.tripsdrill.de ); Schwaben Park ( www.schwabenpark.com ); Traumland ( www.freizeitpark-traumland.de ); and somewhat further away Germany%26#39;s premiere amusement park, Europa Park ( www.europapark.de ), and also Legoland ( www.legoland.de ).

For further information on this part of Germany click on my name for my TripAdvisor contributions, and also look at www.tourismus-bw.de , the website for Baden-Wuerttemberg tourism.

Salzberg is a very easy day trip from Munich. Take the train where you can be comfortable. Trains leave Munich pretty often and it%26#39;s only a couple of hours. It%26#39;s 5 hours on the fast train from Munich to Frankfurt so that is going to take almost a day. I think your plan is too ambitious in terms of territory you plan to cover. There isn%26#39;t much to see in Frankfurt, so if you plan to go that way, Mainz offers more to see. The kids might like Heidelberg.

|||

Thank you for your reply. My husband and son are very interested in the car museums.

Munich to Paris

How does this sound?

Hire a car on our way out of Munich, and drive to Fussen stopping at castles on the way. Next day drive along Romantic Road to Rothenburg (or is that too far in one day?)A day in Rothenburg and then drive to Stuttgart to visit car museum or two then to Heidelberg. Next day to Paris on a fast train from ???

Can we hire a car in Munich and leave it in Heidelberg?

Thanks

|||

The trip sounds fine. There may be no need to drive the Romantic Road which isn%26#39;t romantic but for the most part a normal German two lane highway, just some places along it can be described as romantic. It%26#39;s much faster to drive the A7 autobahn that kind of subparallels it, and would give you more time to stop and see things along the way. Close to the A7 is the lovely church at Ottobeuren which is filled with more beautiful Baroque religious items than can easily comprehended, Ulm with its church with the record height spire which can be climbed if desired, and the Steiff Museum in Giengen, inventors of the teddy bear.

Between Rothenburg and Stuttgart is the excellent walled fortified Comburg Monastery (in www.schloesser-und-gaerten.de ), one of the few places in Germany that I consider a %26quot;must see%26quot;, near Schwaebisch Hall, a nice town in its own right. Between Stuttgart and Heidelberg drive along the Neckar River with its many castles, vineyards and nice old towns. We particularly like Besigheim, Lauffen (a completely walled old part and a nice contrast to over-touristed Rothenburg if you visit it during the tourist season), and Bad Wimpfen. If you forgo your visit to Heidelberg (we like Tuebingen- www.tuebingen.de better and it is near to Stuttgart), you can take the fast French TGV directly to Paris from Stuttgart.

Many places renting cars let you drop off your car at another city in Germany at no extra charge.

Thank you Marcopolko for your help.

1 night in the nicer part of Berlin

Every year we go to Berlin on business and spend 4 nights at the Estrel in the old Eastern side...... need I say more. This year we get to stay one night on the other side and I get to chose. So please save me hours of sifting through all the forums and hotel reviews and give me the best hotel in the best central location for roughly $230 -$250. Please help with suggestions

|||

%26gt; Estrel in the old Eastern side

The Estrel is in Neukölln. This was West-Berlin.

%26gt; ... need I say more

Neukölln was called till 1912 Rixdorf. The cause for the renaming was the bad reputation the name Rixdorf had already at this time (it became only part of Berlin in 1920).

I would suggest to stay in the district Mitte. Thus on the old Eastern side ;-)

The Adlon

http://www.hotel-adlon.de

Hotel de Rome

http://www.hotelderome.com

However there are quite a number of more good 5* hotels in Berlin-Mitte. Certainly no harm to check for a good offer price wise. E.g. using

http://www.hrs.com

|||

I think i didnt make myself clear. All i know is that i always spend four nights in this lonely area at the estrel while my husband is doing business. now i get one night in western europe before we go there. so im looking for a hotel in the exciting part of berlin

|||

The two hotels offered are in %26quot;exciting%26quot; areas. You can also try (might fit your budget better than the Adlon/Hotel de Rome), the following:

- Arcotel Velvet

- Lux 11

- Park Inn

(all four stars)

- Arena (three stars)

|||

Do are these hotels in west berlin where all the shops are like kadewe etc. Thats the area im looking for., like where the Hollywood hotel is.

|||

No, they are nto near the KaDeWe (actually in the East, where most sites are, and close to the shops, I%26#39;m afraid you have some misconception about East Berlin...).

Nevertheless, here are a few hotels close to the KaDeWe:

Four stars:

The Ellington

Alsterhof

Crowne Plaza

Five stars:

Intercontinental

Palace Hotel

Last minute flight change

We are arriving in Frankfurt from Australia on Qantas at 5.15am and have booked a connecting flight to Munich at 11.55am as we wanted to be sure we had plenty of time to allow for delays. Assuming our inbound flight arrives on time has anyone had any luck being able to swap to seats on and earlier connecting flight with Lufthansa???

|||

It%26#39;s much easier if you originally book a closer allowable connection. If this is written on the same ticket and you arrive late, then you should be put on the next available plane.

Lόtzowufer in Berlin Charlottenburg

We are a family of 5 (2 adults 3 kids 7,9,9 )

visiting berlin in summer.I found an apartment Lόtzowufer in Berlin Charlottenburg

what do u think of the area?

Any other suggestion more than welcome

We would rather stay centrally.

|||

Luetzowufer is not in Charlottenburg but in Tiergarten.

But it doesn%26#39;t really matter. It is a good area in my opinion: it is quite (not some main shopping/entertainment district in its own right, but maybe better so when you%26#39;re with kids), but rather close to places where you can eat and entertain yourself/your kids (Potsdamer Platz incl. the Legoland; the Technical Museum, the Zoo), it really depends where on Luetzowufer, but there are also playgrounds and a huge park (the Tiergarten) nearby.

The word %26quot;Ufer%26quot; mean (river or canal) bank in German, and in this case, it is on the banks of the Landwehrkanal, which means that you might also see ducks, ships, and even join one of those neat boat rides in the kanal.

|||

thank u

I also have an offer in Giraffe building wich do u think is better?

|||

I would go for the Giraffe, because it is also very close to a train station and you can easily get to the major sites in the city (I also like the Giraffe restaurant and consider it to be one of the child-friendliest in Berlin); but if the price on Luetzowufer (or other conditions) are more attractive, it is pretty much a draw.

|||

I am just about to book Giraffe thank u for helping

URGENT- How do i get to Berlin Schonefeld???

Hi guys...i will reach Berlin Tegel Airport on the 26/1 at 1255. But on the 27/1 early in the morning at 0805 will leave from Schonefeld to Stockholm.

My problem is...i need to get to Schonefeld before midnight because i plan to overnight at Schonefeld airport. So can anyone please tell me the CHEAPEST way, as in public transport to get there from Tegel?

Or any suggestion that, i should take a short trip to the city center first, and then go to Schonefeld before midnight? Thanks.

|||

The easiest way to get to Schoenefeld from Tegel would be to take the TXL bus from Tegel to Hauptbahnhof (Main Train Station), and from there, there is a regional train, as well as the slower (but more frequent) S9 train, going to Schoenefeld. A 2 hour ticket for the whole fare (and you can make it in two hours) would cost 2.10, a day ticket would cost 6.10.

Hauptbahnhof is very central, close to the Reichstag, to several main sites, and seeing that you have got some time, I would explore the possibility of doing some site-seeing before heading to Schoenefeld.

Did you check if it is at all possible to sleep in the terminal? As far as I know, Schoenefeld closes for the night and it is not one of these huge airports where you can find a bench and sleep from midnight to your flight.

In addition, is the flight at 8:05 or is it the time for the security check? There is public transportation 24/7 in Berlin, so it might be more fun to spend the night in the city and get up early enough to get to the airport.

|||

sorry, you will need an ABC train ticket (Schoenefeld is in zone C), so it is 2.80 for 2 hours and 6.50 for the whole day.

Hilton Berlin or Grand Westin for 3 nights??

Please help us decide between the Hilton Berlin or Grand Westin for 3 nights this spring..

|||

Both are wonderful hotels and almost in the same place - I would choose the one that offers the better conditions (price, better room), but if not, IMHO the scale is slightly in favour of the Hilton.

|||

What makes you favor the Hilton? Are they both very corporate in feeling?

Which city should I visit for first time to Germany

Hi all,

I originally thought my only option to visit a city in Germany was Munich. But now, because of the way the flight is scheduled, I won%26#39;t be flying into Germany, but I have the opportunity to travel to Germany by train via Paris.

For a first time visitor to Germany, which city would be better: Berlin or Munich?

I can take a night train from Paris to Berlin or Munich. I thought about spending one less day in Paris and maybe visit both Berlin and Munich. But travelling between Munich and Berlin by train is too expensive. However, I can get good train fare travelling between Paris and Munich or Berlin.

So for people who have been to both cities, which one would you choose?

|||

Why only these two cities? There are plenty of other cities in Germany that are excellent to visit and a lot closer to Paris. In and around any place in Germany you should be able to easily spend a week or two without running out of excellent things to see and do, after all Germany has over 30,000 castles and palaces alone. You might consider Stuttgart ( www.stuttgart-tourist.de www.tourismus-bw.de www.schloesser-und-gaerten.de ), birthplace of the automobile with its excellent Mercedes Benz and Porsche Museums besides a lot of other good sights in and around it. Just click on my name to see my hundreds of forum posts about this region of Germany. The high speed French TGV runs frequently between Paris and Stuttgart. For travel between Paris and German cities, train tickets can be as low as 29-39€ if bought early enough before the specials sell out.

|||

Thank you for your suggestion. I choose these two cities simply because I honestly don%26#39;t know about other cities in Germany: I picked Berlin because it%26#39;s the capital and the image of modern Germany. I picked Munich because when I think of Germany, I think of Munich.

I will definitely look into your post. In an ideal situation, I could spend 1 week in Germany. But unfortunately, I have very limited time and it will be my first trip to Europe.

|||

I think I would pick Berlin. It is exciting, vibrant, and there is soooo much to see and do there. When you get back to Dallas, you will be happy that you went to this world capitol. You are correct that it is more the %26quot;new%26quot; Germany, but you have a lot of history wrapped up in this city, and there are lovely neighborhoods that did not get bombed, if you desire to walk around and see older Germany. The public transportation is excellent, the food and lodging is reasonable and of a wide variety, and honestly you can%26#39;t go wrong visiting here.

|||

You don%26#39;t say when you will make this trip.

There are specials for the trains from Munich to Berlin from EUR 29,00.

DB timetable

http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en

From: Munich

To: Berlin

How much time do you have?

While 2 days maybe OK for Munich, you really need 3-4 days for Berlin. Munich is however a good base for day trips to other places in southern Bavaria. E.g. Neuschwanstein Castle.

Both cities are quite different. Munich is at least somewhat typical for Bavaria. Berlin is only typical for Berlin (certainly not for the rest of Germany).

|||

Berlin and Munich are interesting, modern cities that could occupy you for a week or longer. But for a first time visitor to Germany, I think you might enjoy seeing a bit more of old-world Germany as well if you have a week. Munich and Berlin were largely flattened and rebuilt after WW II, of course, as were most major cities, so it might be wise to get into the countryside a little bit too and see some well-preserved towns as well.

Marcopolko%26#39;s suggestion of the Stuttgart might work well for this purpose. Stuttgart was targeted heavily too by Allied forces, but it%26#39;s an interesting place and not far from the gorgeous towns of Tübingen, Schwäbisch Hall, Bad Wimpfen, and Calw in the Black Forest. Stuttgart is a good deal closer to Paris, with good connections as well. If you%26#39;re returning to Paris, you could take a slightly different route back - head northwest in the direction of Mainz and loop through the castle-stuffed Rhine and Mosel Valleys before re-entering France at Saarbrücken.

|||

Thanks for all your suggestion. My time currently is anywhere between April 1 - April 8. I will be in Paris by the April 1 and must be there by April 8 to head back to London.

I can travel by Eurostar to either Paris or Brussel. I%26#39;m still looking to see if it%26#39;s better to travel to Brussel. Then do Brussel - Brugge - Paris - (insert a German city here) - Brussel. I understand 1 week is a very short time.

|||

%26quot;I will be in Paris by the April 1 and must be there by April 8 to head back to London.%26quot;

There may be no need to head back to Paris as many German cities have flights to London inexpensively. Two discount airlines which I am familiar with: www.germanwings.com www.tuifly.com . Airberlin and Ryanair are other options, and I%26#39;m sure there are several more.
