German Twin Pass

Hi,

I%26#39;m travelling through Switzerland and Bavaria for two weeks at the end of May. I will be using a Swiss train pass and was looking at the German 5 day twin pass while in Germany. Does the German pass cover the S-Bahn and U-Bahn in Munich?

Also, I will be travelling from Lucerne to Fussen. I%26#39;m assumming I won%26#39;t have to pay anything aditional as I have both passes...is that correct?

Thanks.

%26gt; Does the German pass cover the S-Bahn and U-Bahn in Munich?

Only the S-Bahn (as run by DB). The municipal U-Bahn is not covered.

%26gt; Also, I will be travelling from Lucerne to Fussen. I%26#39;m assumming I won%26#39;t have to pay anything aditional as I have both passes...is that correct?

Not correct. At least not for the 2 shortest routes.

a) St. Margrethen - Bregenz (Austria) - Lindau

i.e. here you have a few kilometers through Austria.

b) Pre Alpine Express - Romanshorn - Ferry Lake Constance - Friedrichshafen - Lindau

i.e. the passes give you only a 50% discount on the ferry

The more interesting route. Albeit with more changes. Train to ferry is no problem as the ferries is connecting both stations directly.

However in both cases the additional will be a single-digit sum in Euro.

Thank you for your assistance. I forgot that the route passes through Austrian territory. Do you know if the German pass requires me to go to the train ticket windows to have tickets issued or can I just get on the train... like the Swisssaver pass?

|||

%26gt; to go to the train ticket windows to have tickets issued

No. But the pass as to be validated before first use. This is also possible at a Swiss counter.

But something else:

For the trips Lindau to Füssen and Füssen to Munich you could use as well the Bavaria Ticket. EUR 28,00 for 2-5 persons. These day tickets cover all regional trains in Bavaria (plays no role on the route to Füssen as there are no others). Plus nearly all other local public transport (e.g. the U-Bahn in Munich).

Thus depending on your further plans a German Rail Pass is probably not the best solution.

I am spending two days in Fussen, then I%26#39;m heading to Rotheburg for two day%26#39;s. I might take a side trip or two before heading to Munich. The 4 day German pass seems reasonable. I wll check out the Bavarian ticket... will it include Rothenburg?

|||

Bavaria Ticket covers whole Bavaria (and a bit beyond). Thus including Rothenburg ob der Tauber.

Map showing where the Bavaria Ticket is valid

bayerntakt.de/media/…Netzkarte_Gesamt0608.pdf

There are 2 restrictions:

a) validity

Mo-Fr: from 9am till 3am next day

Sa,Su: from midnight till 3am next day

b) only local transport is covered

Regional trains, S-Bahn, U-Bahn, trams and buses.

Far distance trains like IC/EC or ICE are not covered.

When using the DB timetable

http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en

select as means of transport %26quot;only local transport%26quot; if you like to use the Bavaria Ticket.

Thank you for your assistance. The inforamtion is very useful.

I like the pre Alpine express from Luzern. Is Friedrichshafen in Bavaria or do I need to buy a point to point to Lindau? I%26#39;m assumming I could pick up the Bavarian pass in Friedrichshafen at the same time as I purchase the trip to Lindau...is that correct?

Thanks.

%26gt; Is Friedrichshafen in Bavaria

No. In Baden-Württemberg.

%26gt; or do I need to buy a point to point to Lindau?

Yes. But actually only to Nonnenhorn, the first stop inside Bavaria. EUR 3,70 from Friedrichshafen.

To Lindau it%26#39;s EUR 5,10.

%26gt; I%26#39;m assumming I could pick up the Bavarian pass in Friedrichshafen at the same time as I purchase the trip to Lindau...is that correct?

Yes. Either at the counter (EUR 2,00 more expensive) or from ticket machines. You can buy from DB ticket machines any Länder-Ticket. The local one will be the default buy you can choose %26quot;other Länder-Tickets%26quot;.

Thank you... I will take your advise and travel via Friedrichschafen. Is the Bavaria pass 2nd class only? Do the regional trains have 1st and 2nd class options?
