Driving from Berlin to Amsterdam

Myself and two friends will be traveling from New York to Berlin in April and we would like to rent a car and drive to Amsterdam for part of the trip.

We have been looking at a few rental car companies, but seem to be having trouble getting exact answers.

I need to know what insurances are included with the cost of renting the car, what size car to get (3 of us all with bags and we need an automatic) and what other fees we would need to pay.

I know traveling by train or flying might be easier, but we want the experience of the drive.

Thanks

%26gt; I need to know what insurances are included with the cost of renting the car

Included is always a motor vehicle third party liability insurance.

Collision damage waiver (cdw) coverage which shifts liability for collision damage from the person renting the car to the car rental company is something you have often to pay extra for.

Some credit cards include however CDW if you rent the car with this credit card.

%26gt; what size car to get (3 of us all with bags and we need an automatic)

... the ones where the rental car companies show 3 suitcases for

europcar.com/EBE/…

e.g. here a VW Passat or Audi A4

%26gt; and what other fees we would need to pay.

If you drive to Amsterdam: international drop off fee

The car has to be driven back to Germany.

You have to expect several hundred Euro.

Some companies will tell you about the fee only after booking. Esp. if no such fee shows up all alarm bells should ring. Sometimes you may get a good deal on this, but for free is more than unlikely.

Or in other words: don%26#39;t do it. If you like to drive in Germany return the car before the border and use the trains from there to Amsterdam. E.g. Cologne. Or as last reasonable option Oberhausen.

Thanks for the reply.

I should have added that we are going to Amsterdam for 2 nights and planning to park the car at the airport and drive back to Berlin (our return flight is in Berlin).

Is there still going to be a fee if we return at the same place we picked up and will they have any objections to us traveling out of the country.

If you return in the same country this is no problem.

If you can return at the very same place you can even consider a budget rental company. E.g.

http://www.interrent.com/

(seem to work only with IE, not with Firefox)

If you return in the same country this is no problem = no drop-off fees.

Driving into the Netherlands is no problem from the rental companies side.

Driving into Amsterdam is nothing I would consider, but as you%26#39;re from New York (once Nieuw Amsterdam) it won%26#39;t be shocking either.

Thank you again.

We plan on driving into Amsterdam and parking at the airport or train station and not using the car until we drive back to Berlin.
