We visited Bonn 20-22 January for a meeting and a bit of tourism. We will never return. I had my MP3 stolen from my backpack (while I was wearing it) and in a separate incident my wife had her purse stolen from her handbag. We are usually very careful about possessions, particularly my wife (no other incidents in many years of travel), however I am sure they were just waiting to pounce. Traveller%26#39;s beware of this place.

I hope you have made a report to the Bonn police. Not that this goes unnoticed in the end.
In 2007 there have been 1774 (reported) cases of pickpocketing (Taschendiebstahl) in Bonn.

I think you better stay at home in future.
Raleigh (NC):

Burglary: 3,327
Bonn (NRW):
inhabitants: 316.000

For thefts I%26#39;ve not found figures you could compare.

We can%26#39;t speak as to your behaviour -- so we cannot tell you if there was something you should or should not have done -- so we%26#39;ll take it at face value and say that it%26#39;s a pity - you seem to have used all of your bad luck in one place. I, too, hope you have reported this to the polizei.
Bonn is a very prosperous small city, and I think you%26#39;ll find that pickpocketing there is no more common nor uncommon than anywhere else.
I have walked alone in Bonn on many occasions, including late at night, and never once felt even remotely threatened.
I think you are blaming an unusually bad streak of luck on a lovely and charming city that doesn%26#39;t deserve the angst.

Sorry to hear about your misfortune and I can understand your feelings about Bonn, but IT happens! In September, 2004 my youngest son had everything stolen at the Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof. He put his belongings in 2 lockers and headed out for some food and a bit of a walk. When he came back the lockers were standing wide open and were stark empty.
He reported the theft and while he was giving descriptions, his girlfriend noticed a character pushing a cart by with her colorful backpack on it. So the police busted this guy. They went to his apartment and was able to retrieve MOST of their things plus literally tons of other travelers misfortunes too! This creep had duplicate keys of most all the lockers in the Hauptbahnhof so that was how he did his deed. The police said this had been going on for about 1 year and were profoundly happy to have finally closed the book on this guy.
But don%26#39;t let this instance interfere with your travels. Next time be sure to travel light and keep your valuables in a front pocket. You have to make things really difficult for the thieves. Don%26#39;t let them win!
