Castle Stays in Germany. Hotels in Bavaria

We booked a flight to Frankfurt and are interested in spending time in small towns, rather than big cities. We will be heading to Wurzburg, going down Rotherburg ob der Tauber. After spending couple of nights in that area, we want to go to Salzburg for few days and then going back through the Bavarian Alps, ending our trip in Fussen.

We are interested in staying for a night or two in a castle located in any of these areas. Besides CASTLE COLMBERG (near Rotherburg ob der Tauber), I haven%26#39;t been able to find reasonable options.

The Tourism office lists several German castles online but they are very expensive.

We are not looking for luxury but rather the experience.

The other question relates to places to stay in the Bavarian Alps. Any suggestions? We are looking at places near Bad Tolz, Bad Wiessee, Schliersee.

Ideas are welcome. Thanks,

There are a number of castle hotels along the Castle Road (Burg Colmberg is one of them). This would require however a route Frankfurt - Heidelberg - Rothenburg ob der Tauber.

Castles are a rather expensive hobby. Thus nearly all castle hotels are rather upscale.

Or you need subsidies. There are also quite a number of castle hostels.

In Spalt between Rothenburg ob der Tauber and Nuremberg:

and in Nuremberg the imperial castle:

Hello Toronto Traveler,

I realize its not in the direction you%26#39;re headed, but there are a few castle hotels along the Rhine, which are only about an hour and a half from Frankfurt.

We stayed at the Castle Leistensten and found it to be quite an experience. Beautiful views from the rooms and grounds of the Rhine, and the rates were fairly reasonable (double rooms are 120 euros; we stayed in the 2 room suite for 145 euros). You do need a car as the castle is up a fairly isolated road at the top of the hill, but they do have parking.

The area is really nice, especially if you like small towns. You can take a Rhine cruise and get on and off at any of the towns along the route. We enjoyed Bacharach and riding bikes along the Rhine. St Goar and Boppard were also nice.

Have a great trip!

Although not in Bavaria, but nearby in Baden-Wuerttemberg, 12th century Katzenstein Castle is south of Rothenburg ob der Tauber and fairly close to Noerdlingen. Besides rooms, they do medieval dinners. As this area is quite isolated from good public transportation, you should have a car to stay there. www.burgkatzenstein.de unfortunately only in German, but you should understand enough of it to get the information you need if you just keep clicking.

I am still trying to get ahold of someone at burgkatzenstein to book a room. In fact, I just posted a thread here asking for help in that regard. If someone else is successful there, please tell me how you did it.

I%26#39;ll paste my reply from the other thread.

My German wife just called them and told them about your problem. They check their e-mail once a day and also their FAX is functional, and she verified that the e-mail address and the FAX number are valid.

E-mail: info@burgkatzenstein.de

Tel: 07326-919656

FAX: 07326-963524

For phoning, I believe that you have to omit the leading 0 if dialing from a foreign country, if that doesn%26#39;t work, than try it with it. You must dial your international access number (may be 011), then the country code 49 then the number. So I believe 011-49-7326-963524 should be the FAX number.

I hope that you have better success.

The castle always fascinated me. My wife%26#39;s sister lives a few kilometers away and we frequently would drive by it, and before they restored and repainted it, it truely looked ancient. Three years ago they had finished their restoration and opened it to the public. The castle%26#39;s chapel has very old paintings that span three different centuries, and the keep (tower) is the first of that design in Germany. The legend about the keep dates it from 777.

Castle Colmberg is terrific.

We booked 2 rooms there several years ago and stayed a few days traveling for a day trip to Rotherburg ODT. The food and ambiance were great.

The next time we stayed in Muich and took the train from Munich to do an overnight in Rotherberg ODT. We stayed in a B%26amp;B next to the Rathhouse and did the nightwatchman%26#39;s tour on the wall.

Those were fun vacations!

Have a good time

Martha
