Can anyone tell how to get to the Neuschwanstein castles using the train from Munich? How long does it take? It is very scenic?
I would like to overnight there and return to Munich the next day. I have never been to Munich before and I am confused by all the information about which train to use. Can anyone assist me? Thanks for your help.

Train from Munich to Füssen and than the final few kilometers by bus to Hohenschwangau.
DB timetable
http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en
From: Munich
To: Fuessen
To: Hohenschwangau
%26gt; I am confused by all the information about which train to use
There are hourly connections to Füssen. Some direct some requiring a change of trains. Travel time is however the same.
Best deal is the Bavaria Ticket. A day ticket covering all regional trains in Bavaria. Plus most other local public transport. E.g. the U-Bahn (metro), trams and buses in Munich. And the buses from Füssen to Hohenschwangau. Bavaria Ticket is valid
Mo-Fr: from 9am till 3am next day
Sa,Su: from midnight till 3am next day
Bavaria Ticket Single (1 person) EUR 20,00
Bavaria Ticket (2-5 persons) EUR 28,00

Very good info from Abad as usual. Also, they have guided bus tours from the city center.. Visit these websites:
www.Autobus-oberbayern.de
www.Muenchen.de/ (sightseeing section)
Since you have never been there, I would suggest this method, which takes about 10 hours for the tour to Neuschwanstein and Oberammagau.. They also do a nice day trip to Salzburg.,

Thank you for the advise.
Should I pre-book train tickets or purchase the day of? Ultimately what I would like to do is fly into MUC, stop at the city center then travel on to Fuessen and taxi to the castles the same day.
Also, how do you purchase the bavaian ticket? I do not see it listed on the website. Thanks!

You can buy the Bavaria Ticket from the ticket machines at Munich Airport.
Buying in advance makes no sense. There are no type of trains between Munich Airport and Füssen where you could reserve seats on.
Bavaria Ticket covers also the buses from Füssen to Hohenschwangau. This bus stop is next to Neuschwanstein Castle ticket centre.
DB on the Bavaria Ticket (one of many Länder (German States) tickets).
bahn.de/international/…laender_tickets.shtml
However by far not as detailed as the pages available in German.
