Routes to the Roots

Does anyone have any experience with a company called %26quot;Routes to the Roots%26quot;? They do geneological research in Germany and provide help with tours in your anscestors%26#39; home area etc.

I have asked them to do research on my family, but I wanted to see if anyone else had had success with them.

Thanks for any insights,

Kim

I%26#39;d try posting this on www.rootsweb.com -- it%26#39;s an enormous genealogy forum, and I%26#39;m guessing you%26#39;d have a better chance of a reliable answer there.

My mother has traced our German ancestry to the 16th century through the microfilms at LDS.

I used the LDS website too. What a great tool. I had no idea that I had ancestors down in Stuttgart back in 1700 and that they were in America before it was the Revolution. Really cool site.

The Stuttgart history museum has a little on immigration, and an exhibit on the German emigrants contribution to the American Civil War.

As to tracing the family back, you%26#39;ll probably run into a brick wall when you reach the Thirty Year War when most churches were burnt, and they kept the records.

Believe it or not, Marcopolko, the German records are remarkably complete -- the folks at the Church of Latter Day Saints have done an outstanding job of compiling family records from all over the world (don%26#39;t worry about privacy, by the way -- names are only published if the person is decesased AND 75 years have passed since the date of death).

Rootsweb is the equivalent of TripAdvisor, only for genealogists -- I%26#39;m sure you%26#39;ll find someone who can give you good feedback -- perhaps on the boards for the region where your family is from.
