Munich area, 3 days, suggestions?

We will be going on a barge trip down the Danube in mid October for a week, haven%26#39;t been to Europe in over 30 years! We will be in Munich for 3 days after the trip but are not usually %26quot;city people%26quot; so I%26#39;d love suggestions regarding possibilities of places to visit outside Munich even though we don%26#39;t have that much time. We are pretty active, but we are seniors. We have limited funds so less expensive ideas would be welcome! My fathers family came from Gotha,%26amp; Calrsbad but many years ago, I don%26#39;t know if I should spend time in these areas, need feedback! We love nature and the outdoors, we will have already seen many castles , ideas welcome, would love to have some train travel if it%26#39;s pretty easy, car rental might be too expensive right now? ...we leave soon.

Hope to hear from someone! Thanks

Hi,

Although you will have seen many castles, Ludwig%26#39;s Herrenchiemsee (Neues Schloss) is only an hour from Munich. Our favorite %26quot;Ludwig%26quot; castle. It sits on an island in the beautiful Chiemsee, which has a beautiful mountain backdrop. Bonus is you take the lake cruise to the island from Prien/Stock. It%26#39;s only a 15 minute cruise but very nice.

Mittenwald (THE quintessential Bavarian village, surrounded by Alps) is about 2 hours from Munich. Mittenwald%26#39;s train station is just a 5 minute walk to the pedestrian zone. One of our favorite places anywhere!

Berchtesgaden is also beautiful (nice old town, mountains, etc.) and under 2 hours from Munich.

Hope this helps.

Lake Chiemsee, about an hour east of Munich by train, is lovely. There%26#39;s a castle patterned after Versailles on an island in the lake, and you can see the foothills of the Alps from the lake.

Mittenwald is also a beautiful small town in the Alps, about two hours south of Munich by train. Bamberg, about four hours north-east of Munich by train, is called the Venice of Germany because of its canals and well worth a visit too.

If you%26#39;re looking for a place to stay, it will probably cost less to stay in small towns than in Munich. Train travel is quite a bargain, especially if you use the Bayern ticket. You can find lots of info about that ticket in the forum.

You mention Gotha and Karlsbad. Both are quite a distance from Munich. Gotha is in Thueringen (Thuringia), 288 km from Munich as the crow flies. Karlsbad (Karlovy Vary)is in the Czech Republic. Very nice spa, but again a long way from Munich ---189 km in a straight line from from Munich. In my opinion, neither is %26quot;a possibility of places to visit outside of Munich%26quot;.

The two other posting give you some attractive suggestions.

Munich itself has a lot to offer. If I had to take one day trip it would be to Oberammergau, my favorite place. Lots of shops, great cafes, a beautiful Bavarian village. The Gorge is not to be missed if you go to Garmisch. They are very close and within an hour or so to Munich. You can take the train to Garmisch and a bus to Oberammergau from there and do both.
