Itinerary and Hotel Suggestions

We%26#39;re a Canadian family spending a year in Ireland and I%26#39;ve been struggling to find a workable plan for the childrens%26#39; (age 6 and9) week off in June. We will be using trains and public transit. This is what I%26#39;m thinking (the total trip would be 9-12 nights depending if I took the kids out of school a few days, so if shorter I might have to skip day 3)

Day 1 Fly into Salzburg, arrive in the evening, spend two nights.

Day 2 See Salzburg I want to do the Sound of Music bike tour (probably too touristy but I have seen the movie a million times), and my husband will want to see something Mozart related.

Day 3 (optional) Go to Berchtesgaden, tour Salzbergwerk, and maybe a boat trip on Konigssee. I think I can get transport on a bus that is part of the Germany system, would this on the Bavarian train day pass or something different.

Day 4 Train to Munich. I will be using the Bavarian ticket. I was planning on staying at a hotel here - need 4 to a room. Current thoughts are either the Novotel or Hotel Eder. We will have an active day pass for Bavaria, what should we do with it. I think it may be too far to go to Fuessen that day. If we stay around Munich, we will do some of the options listed on day 6.

Day 5 Bavaria train ticket, trip to Fuessen to see Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau castles. What are public transport options from Fuessen? Question - I was looking at a pass for all the Bavarian Castles and stuff which looks like a good deal but it does not include Hohenschwangau - is this correct and do you recommend this pass?

Day 6 Munich - thoughts are Residenz, Schloss Nymphenburg which has a carriage museum, and maybe the Deutches Museum, walk around, any other suggestions

Day 7 Head to Berner Oberland for 3-4 nights. Need suggestions here. How early can I book the cheap tickets? It is possible to get them for E39 each and the kids free but usually only the E49 was available if anything. I played around with the system using closer dates and when I tried to shorten the trip by leaving from the last station in Bavaria, it made the regular fare cheaper, but did not offer a discounted fare. There are a few different routes, is there one which is better or more scenic. Also is there a way to have a stopover somewhere on route, the connections are quite fast. I wouldn%26#39;t mind having a bit of time in Zurich, Bern or Lucerne en route. Or is that more trouble than it%26#39;s worth. We could always visit Bern or Lucerne on the way to the Basel or Zurich airport (will fly out from one of these).

Thanks for any suggestions.

Day 3

Salzburg and Berchtesgaden are inside the same local public transport network, the SVV (Salzburger Verkehrsverbund)

http://www.salzburger-verkehrsverbund.at/

With SVV tickets you can also use the buses from Salzburg to Berchtesgaden.

Bavaria Ticket covers only the trains from Salzburg to Berchtesgaden. However on the Bavarian side (e.g. Berchtesgaden to Königssee) also the buses. As there is no SVV mini group ticket, the Bavaria Ticket will be the cheaper option.

Day 5 Füssen

There are frequent buses from Füssen to Hohenschwangau (village). They are covered by the Bavaria Ticket.

The 14 days family ticket for all state owned castles in Bavaria is EUR 36,00 will pay for with your plans.

…bayern.de/englisch/…jahresk.htm

Hohenschwangau castle is however not included, as it still belongs to the House of Wittelsbach (Wittelsbach Foundation).

You may also include on day 4 on your trip from Salzburg to Munich Herrenchiemsee New Palace. From the interior anyway more interesting than Neuschwanstein or Hohenschwangau.

http://www.herrenchiemsee.de

You could swap day 5 and 6. Either stay in Füssen overnight or move onward to Lindau or even Friedrichshafen.

http://www.fuessen.de

http://lindau.icserver3.de/index.php

http://www.friedrichshafen.ws/

Till Lindau you can use the Bavaria Ticket. To Friedrichshafen which is in Baden-Württemberg you have to buy normal tickets for a few kilometers.

From Friedrichshafen ferry to Romanshorn (this is a real train station to train station ferry).

Pre-Alpine Express from Romanshorn to Lucerne

www.voralpen-express.ch/index.php?TPL=10097

Golden Pass / Brünigbahn from Lucerne to Interlaken

www.goldenpass.ch/GPL/societes/carte.asp

You don%26#39;t need a Golden Pass train on this route. Any train on this narrow gauge and partly cogwheel train route will do it.

You could by at Romanshorn station Junior Cards (CHF 20) for your kids. As they are valid also on many mountain railways rather a must.

For yourself you can check out the offers of the Swiss Travel System.

Thanks Abalada,

Regarding the bus to Salzbergwerk, when I went to the SVV site and entered the route Salzburg to Salzbergwerk, I got the following message:

Departure: Stop unknown or to many found!

Arrival: salzbergwerk is suburb of Bramberg/Wildkogel and has been replaced.

Arrival: 14 stops were found - please select one!

There are also no prices on their fare information

From the Salzbergwerk website salzzeitreise.de/en/…mit-bus.html

I found bus instruction pdf that leads to :

salzzeitreise.de/fileadmin/user_upload/be-us…

This is from the rvo_bus.de site but of course I can%26#39;t find it directly being that I have no functional German.

I don%26#39;t have any fare info on that either but if it is higher that the Bavaria day pass amount, would it be covered? Are any of the boats covered on the pass?

Regarding Herrenchiemsee, I had thought about going there en route to Munich from Salzburg but I was wondering about luggage, we would have 3-4 small rolling suitcases with us. Are there any options for storage?

|||

Departure

Town/District: Salzburg

stop: Hauptbahnhof (or any other)

Arrival

Town/District: Berchtesgaden

stop: Salzbergwerk

There is a direct bus #840.

SVV 5 zones tickets are required.

But if you want to go also to lake Königssee you need the 6 zones tickets.

Here a day ticket is EUR 11,20 per adult and EUR 5,60 per child. Thus in sum more than a Bavaria Ticket. Bavaria Ticket does however cover only the route Salzburg - train to Berchtesgaden, bus to Salzbergwerk.

Bavaria Ticket does not cover boats.

Königssee

Prien luggage storage

Don%26#39;t know, but you may send a mail to their tourist office.

Thanks - funny the rvo bus was also route 840, is there route sharing or was it just referring me to the Austria route?

What is the stop for Konigsee?

What is the stop for Konigsee?

|||

Stop for Königssee:

To: Koenigssee Parkplatz

RVO is the company operating the bus line #840 from Salzburg to Berchtesgaden.

The tariff is however set by the SVV.

|||

Thanks- sorry so many questions.

I entered the stop for Koenigssee Parkplatz and it replaced it with Königswiesen Marktplatz and the trip takes 5 hours, so obviously wrong. I did play around and get a closer stop but I can%26#39;t the one you did.

13:20 dep. Berchtesgaden Bahnhof

13:31 arr. Königssee

Bus RVO-Bus 839

Königssee, Jennerbahn

I%26#39;m also confused about which pass can be used where. I know I can take the train to Berchtesgaden with the Bavaria pass, what about the bus 840 either from Salzburg to Salzbergwerk or from Berchtesgaden to Salzbergwerk or from Berchtesgaden to Konigsee.

If I opt for the SVV pass will that get me to Salzbergwerk, Berchtesgaden and Konigsee.

I have started booking things, we are arriving in Salzburg on May 26 at 8pm. So then we go to Munich on May 29 (Friday). So that means 5 and 6 are a weekend. Is there anything close by that we can use the Happy Weekend ticket for and other than going farther that the Bavaria ticket, how is it different. The kids might vote Legoland but not sure if that%26#39;s an option.

%26gt; I%26#39;m also confused about which pass can be used where. I know I can take the train to Berchtesgaden with the Bavaria pass,

Yes.

%26gt; what about the bus 840 either from Salzburg to Salzbergwerk

No. (buses only inside Bavaria)

%26gt; or from Berchtesgaden to Salzbergwerk

Yes.

%26gt;or from Berchtesgaden to Konigsee.

Yes.

%26gt; If I opt for the SVV pass will that get me to Salzbergwerk, Berchtesgaden and Konigsee.

3 x yes.

Price depends on number of SVV zones crossed. By train to Berchtesgaden you need 2 more zones than by bus (which uses a more direct route).

%26gt; Is there anything close by that we can use the Happy Weekend ticket for and other than going farther that the Bavaria ticket, how is it different.

Happy Weekend Ticket covers whole Germany, not just Bavaria. But it covers less local public transport (buses and trams only in a few cities) than the Bavaria Ticket. As all reasonable destinations (e.g. Legoland) are still inside Bavaria you better stick to the cheaper Bavaria Ticket.

Bavaria is slightly bigger than Ireland (but has 3 times more inhabitants).

|||

My province in Canada is 50% larger than Ireland with only about 1/10 the amount of people :)

What I find a little odd in Ireland is that people don%26#39;t explore their own country. We have been to more places since September (day trips on the weekend) than people who live here permanently.

Thanks for the info. I incorrectly assumed that Legoland was in Baden-Wurttemburg because it is closer to Stuttgart. Is it easy to get to Legoland from Gunzburg?

Now I just have to edit where I want to go and string them together better. I also have to decide if I want to stay put hotel wise (Munich or similar) or change hotels. Depending on where we go we could lose more time changing hotels, dropping off luggage etc.

With the Bavaria ticket, I assume you can%26#39;t prebook. Do you just show up and hope there is space? Also does it cover all forms of transport in Munich?

When I go to buy a ticket to Switzerland on the bahn site, some of the options talk about a reservation. If I prebuy my ticket am I already getting a reservation or is that something different.

No difference on this in Germany. For Germans it%26#39;s even easier to go abroad.

%26gt; Is it easy to get to Legoland from Gunzburg?

Free shuttle buses from Günzburg station.

A public transport concept is a must for all bigger projects in Germany.

%26gt; With the Bavaria ticket, I assume you can%26#39;t prebook.

Yes. You cannot reserve seats on regional trains.

%26gt; Do you just show up and hope there is space?

Yes. At places like Munich which is for many trains the start(/end) point you can show up 5-10 minutes early to have free choice on seats.

And apart from this: regional trains stop fairly often. People will free their seats and leave the train, while new travelers come on board. But in the mean time you have already secured the freed seats ;-)

%26gt; Also does it cover all forms of transport in Munich?

Yes. S-Bahn, U-Bahn, trams and buses in Munich are covered.

%26gt; If I prebuy my ticket am I already getting a reservation or is that something different.

It%26#39;s something different. Seat reservations in Germany (and also Switzerland) are independent from your train ticket. In theory you can reserve now seats for a trip in 2 months and buy the tickets only minutes before departure.

Please note that the seat reservations are only good for 10 minutes after departure, i.e. in this time frame you have to occupy your reserved seats. Afterwards anybody can use these seats. Most will wait however longer before doing so or still free it without making much trouble. This explains also why the reservation (display/paper slip) may well disappear/be removed before you have reached your destination.
