Will be in Erlangen,Germany 3/30/09 thru 4/3/09 with the fourth member of our party in training. Looking for some must see day trips or interesting ideas within 50 miles of Erlangen. We will have a car but are open to public transportation if it makes more sense.
Thanks

The city with the most listed buildings in Germany. And the secret beer capital of Germany.

The big city in the area. Museums, shopping etc.
Rothenburg ob der Tauber

The most famous small medieval town in Germany.
Albeit the distance is a bit more than 50 miles.
Erlangen, Herzogenaurach, Nuremberg and Rothenburg are all inside the VGN, the public transport network of the Greater Nuremberg Area.

VGN offers mini group day tickets (TagesTicket Plus). Valid for 1-6 persons, albeit only 2 of them must be older than 18 years. Price depends on the number of zones you need. The version covering the whole VGN area is EUR 14,20. If bought on a Saturday this ticket is also good for Sunday.
To Bamberg you can use the Bavaria Ticket. A day ticket for 2-5 persons for EUR 28,00. Validity
Mo-Fr: from 9am till 3am next day
Sa,So: from midnight till 3am next day
Both tickets cover all local public transport. Regional trains (RB, RE), S-Bahn, U-Bahn (metro - exist in Nuremberg only), trams (exist in Nuremberg only), buses.
