Going to Essen for treatment, but adding time to explore

My flight arrives in Frankfurt around 11 AM on Friday 2/27. I am scheduled for treatment at the Krupp hospital in Essen from 3/2 through 3/7. I am booked to leave Frankfurt on 3/18 in the early afternoon.

I am traveling alone, as my DH cannot get away from work. I am able-bodied despite the need for medical treatment, and I am looking forward to seeing this historic and beautiful part of Germany. I%26#39;m even working on learning the language, using an online tutor. I am interested in art and architecture, and plan to get around by train rather than drive, although I could rent a car if it seems worthwhile.

I will probably book a Rhine cruise, and make a stop in Koln/Cologne and Dusseldorf, and a friend suggested Wuerzburg. I wonder whether I could also visit Berlin?

I would prefer to stay in B%26amp;Bs or small inns, as I want to have contact with other people.

Any suggestions and help planning the last minute trip would be greatly appreciated.

Will anyone else be in the area, and want to get together for a glass of wine?

These are directly on the route from Frankfurt to Essen.

Rhine cruises are however pretty limited this time of the year.

The Ruhr Area is however not an as historic and beautiful part of Germany like the Middle Rhine Valley. For wine the Middle Rhine Valley is also the better choice. Ruhr area is rather known for beer.

Than you could travel to Berlin and back to Frankfurt via Würzburg

With such longer trips a German Rail Pass would make sense.

Thank you for all your suggestions and links. I will spend some time exploring them, looking forward to my visit.

That%26#39;s a nice amount of time. The weather may still be a bit cold and the landscape a bit bleak to make cruising a big goal. But there are some things to see and do in the region south of Cologne.

-Aachen and its cathedral

-Tour of medieval Marksburg Castle:

-Germany%26#39;s oldest city, Trier

B%26amp;B%26#39;s are indeed a good way to go but are most common in the smaller villages. I would look into centrally-located towns like St. Goar, Boppard, and Cochem; doing daytrips by train (daypass: Rheinland-Pfalz Ticket single, 19 Euros) from these towns to the places mentioned above is very feasible. You could stay in one place for several days without packing and unpacking.

This page has B%26amp;B accommodations in this area with reviews:

The Würzburg area is a good idea too. W%26#39;burg and the nearby towns of Rothenburg, Nuremberg, and Bamberg make for good outings. You%26#39;ll actually find small time B%26amp;B%26#39;s more plentiful in touristy but precious Rothenburg than the other towns. Würzburg and Nuremberg are larger and more modern, so I would suggest staying in one of the other towns for the best day-to-day atmosphere. Daytrip here by train on the Bayern Ticket single (20 Euros.)

Best wishes for a pleasant trip.
