Crazy days 2009

Hi

My boyfriend booked us a trip to Cologne for the carnival and we are staying at the Dom Hotel. We arrive on Womens Day (thursday) and depart on Monday.

I looked up http://www.koeln.de/en/ and it looks like a lot of fun. We were thinking of bring fancy dress clothes with us - but what type of fancy dress is it? Will any costume do?

I was also wondering what we should expect or if anyone has some advice on good bars/ restaurants to go to during the carnival. Will everything be open? (We%26#39;re 30 - in case that helps!)

Thanks in advance

Karen

Yes. But when watching the big parade on Monday don%26#39;t choose one in which you%26#39;ll freeze to death.

The ones where you%26#39;ll have a chance to get in. Which is totally unpredictable.

Hi Karen,

you will have so much fun! Make sure you have a costume that you can layer because it might be freezing when you are outside and hot inside the bars and clubs. Face paint / heavy make up and accessories are always good.

Expect a lot of partying and drinking. Try not to have handbags or camera bags on you because it will be very busy.

In terms of where to go. Just walk around the city centre and see where everybody goes. A lot of teh partying will be outside anyway. All the bars and clubs along the river will have something on, as will all the city centre pubs.

In terms of available drinks ... When it gets busy there will be only %26quot;Koelsch%26quot; to drink, the local beer. The waiters will push their way through the crowds and you buy it directly from them. From time to time they might come through with cokes, but there is not much else on offer. The beer is very nice though. The good thing is, in case you don%26#39;t speak any Germany, you only need to hold up 2 fingers and point at the beer, a lot of communication will be via gestures as it will be loud and busy ;o)

Expect some very peculiar sort of music to be played ... This %26quot;fifth%26quot; season has it%26#39;s own set of songs and many people will know all the words. After a couple of days you will recognise the songs!

Have fun!
