Re Euro rail - Boring topic I know!

Can anyone advise us as to our best option.

We hope to fly into Munich spend a week in Munich travelling day to day to places in Bavaria.

Then wew hope to take the train for an over night week end in Salzburg and then take the train back to Paris via Munich and Stuttgart.

Anyone any ideas as to whether it is cheaper for us to take an 8/10 day travel pass for 420 euros approx to 490 euros or should we just buy our tickets as we want them?

Thanks OLOL

Is this a question of cost or convenience?

We choose to buy Flexipasses for trips to Germany and Austria. Last year we began and ended our trip in Munich, headed to Salzburg on arrival for a few days, daytripped to St. Gilgen (bus), St. Wolfgang (ferry), Konigsee (bus), then trained to Vienna where we planned to spend a few days but our group decided to cut this stay short and return to Salzburg which we did for two more nights. We then headed back to Munich and day tripped by train to Garmisch.

We really liked the flexibility of a pass and are doing the same this winter with an itinerary beginning in Berlin and ending in Prague with the middle 5 days being spent in Salzburg.

The pass was no more expensive for us. The extra trip from Vienna to Salzburg was 132E per person in first class and was unplanned so this worked really well.

We also use rail passes when we visit Italy to give us maximum flexibility. We like to base somewhere for 3-5 nights and day trip.

The Federal state of Bavaria has a Regional train/local bus/local tram Day ticket called the Bayern-Ticket. On trains, the ticket is only valid for 2nd class travel on RE, RB or Regional R trains. Tickets can be purchased from a machine or agent.

With this ticket you can travel all day long anywhere within the State [including to Salzburg and Ulm] after 09:00 on weekdays or anytime on weekends. The ticket is not valid for local transport in Salzburg or Ulm. www.bayern-takt.de/public_main_modul.php…

You can download a PDF map which will show you were the ticket is valid for travel. www.bayern-takt.de/call_media.php…

For travel from Salzburg to Paris, beginning 90-days in advance, you could purchase online the discounted 2nd class Europa-Spezial Frankreich ticket. 2nd class fares are 39 € or 89 € each and includes the TGV train reservation. Europa-Spezial Frankreich 1st class fare is 119 €. The normal 2nd class fare from Salzburg to Paris via Stuttgat is 163 €.

The ticket can be printed out on your home computer but the tickets is only valid on the train booked. Up to 24-hours before departure, there is a 15 € surcharge if you decided to request a refund. These tickets are limited and sell out quickly on trains to Paris. The 39 € fare will be sold out 70 days in advance .

Booking is at the DB website. http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en

Remember that you allowed to bring your own favorite snacks, food and beverage on board any train.

Thank you for that - its a question of cost only.

Doesn%26#39;t really bother us queueing to get tickets etc if the there is a big price difference but if it is worthwhile financially getting the pass then we would get the pass.

Dont want to spend 430 euros for a pass and then find the whole thing only cost 250!

Thanks a lot
