Hi
we%26#39;re going to Berlin for a long weekend in May, for our wedding anniversary. Having never been before and taking note of the comments on the hotel reviews on this site, it seems that many of the main attractions are quite far apart and require public transport or bike hire. This is not a problem for us, but bearing it in mind, does anyone have any advice on where we should base ourselves? We%26#39;ve been considering a couple of hotels near the Ku%26#39;damm and one north of Mitte, near the Nordbahnhof. We%26#39;re not interested in shopping or clubbing, but would like a hotel with a choice of reasonable restaurants nearby.
thanks very much
Lisa

Berlin is a vast city which has no real centre (owing to fifty years of division). Therefore, wherever you choose to base yourself in the German capital, you will have to travel around a bit to see everything. (This, incidentally, is not a problem. Berlin has, perhaps, the most well integrated and efficient public transport system of any city in Europe).
In terms of being near restaurants, there is nothing much of this persuasion near the Nordbahnhof itself, though a short S-Bahn ride will bring you to the Oranienburger Straße, which is a major restaurant and bar area of the Mitte district. It and its extension, Hackescher Markt, is a very lively area and popular with tourists and locals alike.
Kurfürstendamm and its surroundings offer an abundance of shopping and dining opportunities. The area is again very lively.
So, I guess the choice is yours. Either hotel would suit.

Nordbahnhof surroundings are not particularly attractive but there are a few restaurants and Oranienburger Strasse is walkable (it%26#39;s next stop on the S-Bahn).
Lots of the main sights are in Mitte and quite a few are walkable from that area. One Easter we stayed in an apartment on Novalisstrasse which is in that area and walked to all the sights in Mitte even to Checkpoint Charlie and Alexanderplatz/Nikolaiviertel. But you have S-Bahn line atNordbahnhof (also good for Oranienburg for Sachsenhausen and for Wannsee and Potsdam). Also U-Bahn line at Zinnowitzer Strasse, and M12 tram (takes you down to Museum Island or up to PrenzlauerBerg.
Kudamm area is better for shopping but few main sights in that part of the city.

Reni and I prefer Kudamm area..we usually stay at Olivaer Apart on Olivaer Platz for price and many restaurants all within walking distance..
It is maybe a 2 or 3 star, older holtel, which we prefer..if you like new shiny glitter and mirrors in a hotel this isnt the place...
